Hi everyone,

I came across this forum whilst looking for a "nail course" its something I've always been interested, but never really looked in to it properly until now.

I came across the Essential Nails course (Yes I have read all the negative feedback on it!!) and thought this would be good FOR ME to get started. I am a full time mum to 2 children, my partner works full time so its hard for me to go to classroom courses. SO, I thought I would do the course from EN to get me STARTED....I don't expect to become a "pro" from just this but just thought it would be good to start off and give me confidence before going to a classroom course. Does everyone think this is a good thing for me to do or a waste of money? I am in no rush as I know the more experience the better, but after reading the posts on here about it I am in two minds?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Haley :)

Persoanlly I think it's an awful lot on money to spend to test the water...... IMO classroom training is the only way to learn nails, if you do the EN course and you're not happy with the nails you produce, how do you know where you went wrong and how you improve them? You will still be wondering if it's you, the product, or your lack of technique......

JMHO

Totally agree with Yvette) good luck;))

EN works for many people as an introduction into the nail world but all serious technicians then seem to go on and start again with a good company foundation course, thus costing total up to a 1000.00 to do what you could have done for half that with good Brand training.

Whats the rush? :D If you have the funds (and the self motivation which is very important) and don't mind paying double and just HAVE to get going, then do it. But you could wait a year or so until the children are older and you have more time to devote to nails and still get going in the same amount of time and for half the money.

Hi Haley, welcome to the board.

I'm new here too and I can't comment on Essential Nails as I have never heard of them.

One thing that confuses me a little (it doesn't take a lot to do that, lol) and that is you say you can't go to classroom classes as your partner works fulltime but then you go on to say that you will then do a classroom course after doing the E/N course. Do you mean that you will do a classroom class straight after completing E/N or you will leave it until a much later date to go to classroom classes?

Would it not be possible to do one night a week at college now? I am doing a 17 week evening course at college and it starts from 6-9. Would your husband not be home to look after the children or do you have a family member friend who could help you out?

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you success. xx

hi hun i have done the en course for gel as im a full time mom too, it was a great insight but im now at college studing for a vctc although i did a few clients i had so many problems with things going wrong ,, the en team are fantastic there always on hand to help but it's much better to have someone looking over you picking up on any mistakes your making before they become a habit,,

my course is an evening course 3 hrs a week and it's great so much better been able to ask questions and see first hand how to do things !!!

the airbrush cousre is fab and the nail art dvd is ok to !!

good luck :)

Hi Haley,

I have just completed the EN Acrylic course and feel that I am at a stage where I can offer "family and friends" cheap sets of nails but there is no way I would be confident enough to take on new clients paying what the other nail techs on here charge as I feel my training has not been thorough enough!! I am fortunate enough not to work full time and I have no children but I found it so hard to devote the time to sit and practice when its just you and that plastic hand your motivation has to be high to sit and complete the 100 sets you need to do(it took me a year to get the motivation to finish and left a few months between sets when i couldn't quite "get it")! Although the girls are very good they are always on the end of the phone and can't actually see what you are doing in order to help you correct your mistakes (you may never know you are doing something wrong!!).

On the other hand I have completed the course and can now apply a set of acrylic nails which stay on, look nice and will be the foundation to move forward with my education, but with any course or system you start off with there will always be different skills and technology for you to learn.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. xx

If you are going to do an EN course, I think you'd be as well doing a class instead. I'd say go with one of the "product houses" and I can't recommend CND highly enough. The foundation is 5 days, with 3 days one after the other, then 2 further days several weeks on, but a couple of weeks or so apart if you kow what I mean. Can't you get someone to watch the kiddies for these days? In my opinion you can't beat the thorough grounding you'll get from a course like CND, the great products that are included, and the educator training and supplier support. You'll be lucky to get these through a college, although some lucky people have managed. Try to get a babysitter and start off what I would suggest is the right way.

Thanks for your comments everyone.

Like I said, im in no rush to be a pro ( not that you can rush and be a 'pro' ;) ) so not wanting to go onto the proper courses like CND. So I would not be going to classes straight after EN no. I want to practice as much as I can at home to get confident with it. I understand its not something I will learn overnight, so when my youngest is full time school (he's just turned 2) i would consider going to a classroom. I just thought it sounds ideal for me to do the EN course for the practice. It seems to be the only decent one I can do from home that i've found online.

Moneys no problem at all and I have lots of self motivation. I like the fact the EN is from home which is ideal for me right now, im too eager to get practicing lol thats why I don't mind paying out the money to 'test the water' before I move to proper classes.

Well :D and I mean this with a smile ... you asked for advice .. you have gotten it and as per most people you didn't really want advice but rather validation that other people would agree with what you WANT to do .

If you think it's the right thing for you then you wont come to any harm from doing it. Everyone has to start somewhere and you are very eager, so order your kit and if you need any help you can always get it here .. loads have done this course as a start .. we always go on to learn more no matter where we begin. Good luck!!

I did want advice :D...If someone would of said that the course is a complete waste of money/time and I wouldnt learn a single thing, I probably wouldnt buy the course...:D

But It's just for me to practice. I just like the idea of learning the basics from home that way by the time I go to classrooms, I will have a bit of experience/knowledge. Another plus to my 'new found career' is my partner runs his own very successful Web Development company so I will be getting my professional website for free :D

So (unless anyone wants to tell me a dreaded story lol) I will purchase the course very soon.

No no ... there are no dreaded stories .. EN has been going for a good few years now and I have been personally involved with them .. you've no worries they are nice people.

I dont think you will have any dreaded stories hun and good for you if this is what you want to do as a stepping stone then you wont be losing out! All I would do differently is to make sure I put time away each week where I knew i'd be doing nails to keep myself motivated (I also found it harder to practice on the nail trainer and was far to critical on myself which blew my confidence, once you pass and practice on real people your times go down and you get more confident).

HTH xx

good luck with it Sarah the lady whom you go to if you have a problem is so nice really helpful and im glad i took the course to get me started :)

Thanks :) I am looking forward to learning all about nails.

I did the EN course for the same reason. My youngest was about 4 months when i got the course, i didnt want to wait, i wanted something to do while i was at home being mummy and i thought i could do the course whilst he was young and then once he was old enough, i would be a nail pro and be off out earning a fortune  hmmmm.... i was obviously wrong!

Well, it hasnt quite worked out like that, once i started i realised there was loads more to learn than i could pick up at home, but i still enjoyed it.

It sounds like you're going into it with your eyes open, you know there is more costs and training to do afterwards and that its just a start.

The guys and girls at EN really lovely. So enjoy yourself and be prepared to get the nail bug!!! xxxx

I agree with everyone, it is a waste of money. I think you will be better off doing a nail technology course at your local college in the evening, you will learn alot more can do it in the evening when your partner is home from work. I found that this worked for me.

I'm currently doing some courses with EN (fibreglass and nail art, plus I haver a maintenance course too) and have to say that for someone who can't (for whatever reason) do a course outside the home, these are ideal! The girls are right though when they say that when you need help on a certain problem it is hard to have someone at the end of a phone trying to guide you rather than someone looking over your shoulder, but you work when YOU want to for as long as you want and you do get a LOT of practice.

The nail trainer isn't the easiest thing to work on though, I am having nightmares with tipping at the moment which I feel wouldn't happen on a real person. That said, if you can conquer the nail trainer a real person will be easier, scarier, but easier ;)

I wouldn't say the courses are a waste of money at all but do be aware that to complete the course you will need to buy more nails and tips.

Good luck with it and don't be afraid to ask for advice, the guys and gals on here (and at EN) are lovely.
