hey all,

I start training in Sept, but Ive been getting some self taught practice in, how am I doing?

Be honest...

I'm sure you're just dying to get started, but it is much easier to teach a clean slate that one who already may be forming bad habits.

Just wait until your training. This will also avoid potentially damaging your (or anyone else's) nails.

You could read up on product chemistry, research jobs, or make a business plan.

Good luck on your course!

thank you for being honest, im busy doing business plan too, and designing website and getting it up google rankings too :)

These look lovely,,,are these white tips by any chance, xxx

I agree you need to wait for your professional training before you carry on doing any nails. You may pick it up really quickly on your course but you may be doing something now that potentially damages your client. You will also not be insured without a recognised certificate.
As for your nails you look like you will make a great start on your course, your white tips are placed too far down the nail especially on the ring and pinkie fingers. Get reading all you can on the health and structure of the nail, all about product chemistry and safe ways of working and I'm sure you'll race through your course. Good Luck!

yeah I have only been doing mine own, wont do other peoples until im qualified. Im reading my books already learning about the products etc. Ive trained as a nurse previously so feel confident in the anatomy of the finger nail & hand.

Just so excited to get started :) I thought my smiles were too low.. but they kept moving when I was trying to make them neater

These, really do look like white tips, did you sculpt these with L&P xx

i used star nails i think its called, white powder and clear powder. im quite confident with a paint brush and it did take me probably about 4 hours to do, but Ive not buffed them, just applied top coat to make them shiney. maybe the photo is making them look better then they are? I will try and take a close up of 1 nail

I would stress to wait, I know its tempting to try but you need to have your training first there are many problems you can cause yourself by trying it now. Damage to your nails and overexposure are a couple of the big ones.

i think you show great potential.

you have good control of the white, the smiles are very consistent for a beginner, i had to have another look to convince myself they were not white tips. that part of the job is probably the hardest to master.
the photos not quite clear enough to get a good look at how the rest of the nail is but id agree that the depth of the whites needs reducing.

i'm glad you are taking the training though.
i think you understand its importance.

If that isn't white tips (as I thought at first too) then you did a very nice job.
Those smilelines is great, have seen worse from more experienced techs (including myself)
So you should just lay down your brucs, focus on theory and don't worry about the application as you'll def pick that up fast
Then when you start training, pay special attention to zone 3 as it's not flush too the nailbed in your picture. You are lucky you won't struggle as much with the smiles...

thanks for all the kind comments. im going to be removing these soon now, as ive made the big decision to do a CND foundation course so want my nails to be as healthy as possible ready for it.

I have done A level in Fine Art, and paint alot now as a hobby.. maybe nails are slightly different to canvas... but using a paint brush is 2nd nature to me, I think this possibly helps me to achieve good shape smiles, but it did take me ages to acheive this, which probably wont be good if I am doing a paying client, so I look forward to practicing all the time once I'm on my course.
