Hi there,

I'm currently at college doing silk nails. I have been using Star Nails, Ultra Form but on one client I needed to cut Wells out. Is there any advice on how to cut a perfect well?

I am usind curved scissors but when I cut my Well, I seem to catch my scissors on the side of the tip and bend it downwards .

x

Do you mean creating a well in a tip?

Hi hun.

The Ultra Forms already have a Well, but I need to cut the Well down.

Sorry if i'm not making any sense.

I cut one side, turn it over and cut out the other from the underside. Or you can file it out.

IMO hun I trained with tips with wells where I had to use acetone to blend them in etc ...

I've recently found that using tips with just a small well (big enough to put a little glue in & attach to end of natural nail) are alot easier & quicker to work with - especially if using white french tips :)

Thank you all for your replies. It is very much appreciated.

I was using Star Nails Ultra Forms with the Wells. I've just ordered some Star Nails Revelation which only have a tiny well.

In everyones opinion when would you use the tips with the wells and the ones without a well?

I'm only 3 weeks into my college course so it's all completely new to me. I've got a fab teacher though who is very passionate about what she does and I have a lot of respect for her.

IMO I'd use tips with wells on 'nail biters' who no doubt have no free edge & a very short nail bed :)

I think its all down to personal preference though & it's all trial & error :)

Glad your enjoying your college course !! Hope to see your work soon x

Personally I have some of all types around as they suit all different nail plates. You never know whos gonna need what. I always file my well out and find that the easiest way. Ofc you can sit and pre-file/cut the wells out when your board or not busy so they are there ready and waiting when you need them GL and HTH.

I did a full set on myself with the Wells in (Star Nails Ultra Form) and they looked really good for a first attempt and especially doing them on myself.

I then put the same tips on my friend who is a nail biter and had a very wide, flat but short nail bed and the tips went virtually 90% up the nail bed. It took me hours to blend them and the next day she had lost 3 of them! I was absolutely gutted.

So now I am confused on when and with whom I need to use Wells on and who not to use Wells on (hope this makes sense, lol)

Personally I wouldnt use a tip on anyone without filing part of the well out. You say you covered up 90& of her nails, well L+P bonds with the natural nail plate its the strongest bond, by covering it up this amount you are not giving the product enough to bond with hense the enhancements coming off. I hope someone more knowledgable will correct me if I am wrong and I hth you Lou lou. I can see why you are confused.

Hi Nickie,

I was using Silk hun. Not that it makes any difference, I still shouldn't have covered the nail plate that much, but I had not been given the college handout regarding this until the week after.

I guess that will teach me for trying to run before I can walk, lol.

I prefer to file it out, because you've room to play (as opposed to cutting when you have to get it right first time) but it takes practice to get it right! I'd get some cheapie tips just to use for that purpose. Your tutor should be able to show you how to hold the file to get the shape that you need. HTH's
