Hi All,

Currently studying NVQ beauty therapy at college but they do not include make-up as it is an optional unit.

Was thinking of doing the make-up course with Pinks but it is only a 2 day course. Can I learn what I need to in 2 days?

Has anyone done this course? if so would you recommend it?

Also I am doing facials from now till the end of the college year should I wait until I have done this before doing the make-up course?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't done a make up course as such, however I'm doing the NVQ lvl 2 Beauty Therapy at the moment (I am in 2nd year, finish in June 09). We started the make up unit before xmas, and from the training we had I am also thinking of doing an additional course!

We literally had a 30 min demonstration and a few leaflets handed out - 1 with a colour wheel and 1 for the procedure of applying in correct order! Not sure if this is just my college showing the basics, or the NVQ as a whole. Our tutor did tell us if we wanted to go on and become a make up artist we would need to do further courses!

I know a lot of it is probably learnt as you go along, about colour matching etc but surely there is more to the training than 30 mins!

I really don't feel confident about doing someone's make up - how do i know what colours to put where etc!

I would also appreciate anyone elses comments!

I think you can learn a lot in 2 days, but what you will have to do afterwards is practise, practise, practise.

Once you have the basic knowledge dont be afraid of doing anyone's makeup if you get a chance, thats how you will improve your skill :)

That is all we was shown on our make up section for NVQ too. Not near enough in my opinion. But as someone else has said...practice! and remember, it's only make up, if you make a mistake it wipes away and you can start again

Hi,

My make up training on level 2 was very basic too, it didn't really teach me anything I didn't already know.
I'm a mobile therapist doing all level 2 treatments plus some extra treatments but I don't do make up, i'd need more training.
I'm also currently doing level 3 and my college offers extra courses such as hot stone massage, threading etc, these are taught by other companies such as the modern school of ancient therapies, the courses are hugely discounted. This month we have art deco coming in, a day course costing just £35, does your college offer any extra courses like this? They'd be well worth doing if you can.

I am about to complete a 17 week night school VTCT level 2 makeup diploma. Apart from the sometimes questionable knowledge of the tutor (laguna hair, anyone?!), and the dreadfully dim 17 year olds on the course, it was a worthwhile course to do. However, there are many sites on t'interweb from which you can learn additional stuff, and there are several really good books which will teach you a great deal. I use Kevyn Aucoin's Making Faces, and this this one.
What I did was nip down to the local hair salon and hand out vouchers for a free makeup to clients and staff so that I had plenty of willing volunteers for me to practise on. Like Ann and the others have said, you need to practise. A lot. This will get your confidence up, and your timings down. It will also help you to learn which of your tools and products you like, which ones work well, what gaps you have in your kit.

Another very useful (and enjoyable) thing to do is to go round the cosmetic counters in your local department stores and make friends with the ladies there. Explain what you're doing, go on a wet Tuesday morning, not a busy Saturday afternoon, and you will find yourself beautifully made up, and laden with ideas, samples and freebies! Don't dismiss these ladies; I know that a lot of the Houses train their girls jolly well in makeup.

Enjoy!
