I had my nose pierced about 7 years ago with a gun, it never really healed to be honest but I really like it so I kept it in. But, there is a little red lump above the piercing which basically never goes away. My friend told me it is caused from having the piercing done with a gun as it apparently PUSHES the skin up to make the hole instead of piercing THROUGH as a gun would.
So about 1 1/2 years ago I let it heal up and had it done again, although still with a gun but the same thing has happened. I now cannot take it out; a- because I love it and; b-the piercing sort of draws the eye away from the lump!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE does anyone know of anything I could do, or put on it to alleviate the lump, get rid of it or ANYTHING.
All comments and advice would be extremely appreciated.
(sorry for the LONGGGG message:))

Hiya :)
What jewellery have you got in it?
Is the red lump kind of hard, or weepy?
Does it hurt?
& my main question:
Why the heck did you get it re-gunned?
Generally speaking the nostrils are just too cartilaginous to be successfully gunned.
Its not so much because the stud pushes the tissue to one side (a needle sort of does that too), but because the stud is way too blunt, which (generally speaking) causes tissue damage to cartilage.

Now boring lectures aside...
Your jewellery is the most likely culprit.
Buy a titanium nostril stud from a reputable piercer & ask them to fit it for you.
Are you okay with tea-tree oil?
If so, I really recommend putting ONE or TWO drops on a cotton bud, and dabbing it directly onto the bump, approx 3 x a day until the bump has gone .
But do watch out for any new irritation, & if it does irritate (It hardly ever does, mind), discontinue use.
Another useful thing to do is to sea-salt soak the piercing.
Leave the stud in, get a shot-glass filled with cooled prev. boiled water with less than 1/8 of a spoon of salt, & submerge your piercing (dont breath too deeply lol), soak for 5 mins.
This wll draw out any goo (lymph) lurking in there.
HtH's (& you thought your post was long, lmao)

Edit to add:
I see you live in Brighton, you're most reputable piercer is Quentin at Kalima. xx

Hey,

I used to have this problem on my Tragus piercing for a really long time.. then my piercer told me to use a tiny amount of steriod cream on the 'red dot' for a week..i did and it dissapeared!!!!

Doctors dont prescribe steriod cream though unless you suffer from really bad excema..i got some from my friend.

Hope this helps, it really worked for me as i didnt want to take my piercing out!

Not being a nag here, but you should never use or recommend the use of someone elses medication.

Hi Jen,
steriod creams -actually creams of any kind are to be avoided on piercings.
Its great that it worked for you, but many many people cause themselves much more aggro this way.
Unfortunately, Doctors are'nt known for their sound piercing knowledge.
Your red-dot: was it raised? weeping etc.?
Chances are it was (again) jewellery that was to blame.
hypertrophic scarring (red lumps) can be caused by ill-fitting jewellery moves around too much, or poor quality jewellery causing irritation.
This can be due to:
*too high a content of nickel in the metal.
*not perfectly polished metal with minute scratches, can cause many probs.
*Ill fitting jewellery.

edit:
You seem to be in the right area to visit Kalima too,
next time, see them before visiting yourDrs x

It sounds like it could be a keloid. which is scar tissue caused from trauma. The gun piercing can cause it, but often the jewellery is a big factor. Massaging it with vit E oil and using tea tree oil can really help get rid of it.

Nope, not a keloid.

Keloids are actually very serious (& fairly unusual) & often need medical assistance to be removed.
They cannot be removed with tea-tree oil, & are liable to grow over time.
This is most likely hypertrophic 'scarring', which can easily be reduced using the methods you describe, & can also be caused in the way you describe.
People very often get the two confused (in the same way that people get cuticle & pterygium confused)

You are most definetly correct. It's been so long since I did any body piercing and am rusty on my terminology. :)

The last I heard in Australia it is illegial to pierce noses with a gun and has to be done by the usual body pierceing methods (usually cathether) because of the problems guns can cause.

I had mine pierced years ago with the gun and it never healed properly. Was always sore and pusy. I took out the piercing, let it heal and them got it cathether pierced and it's been good as gold since.

I once had a problem with an ear pierceing where a lump of skin grew next to the earring and started to grow over it. The Dr had to cut it off and he said the reason it happens is that when you get a pierceing done with the gun, sometimes a little bit of skin can get pushed back into the pierceing and then it grows causing the lumpy thing .

Hey,
I know its not right to use other peoples prescribed creams, but after nearly 1 1/2 years of having a horrid red lump growing around my piercing, and trying everything from tea tree oil, to having the jewellery size and type changed 4x (which is very very painful)...i got desperate and used the steriod cream, from my friend, as i love my piercing and wouldnt ever want to take it out!..within days it had gone...Short and simple solution for me, but of course i dont recommend everyone doing it.

xxxx

p.s - I didnt go to my doctor as i didnt think they would be able to help me, and I go to Flux for my piercings as I know them very well.

xxxx
