I was trained to do eyelash perms and so is my colleague. It was quite quiet today and we decided to do one on each other (patch tested each other 48 hours ago as we knew we would be clientless this afternoon) all was fine.

However, my right eye is sore and stingy, its the lid. its also swollen. I have had a cold compress on it, but cant understand why the patch test did not react. we followed instructions, have done it about 8 times on clients and so its not an unopened/untried bottle and it was the fixing lotion as I felt discomfort once that was applied. However, it was not severe intitially, but after about 4mins it was uncomfortable so we stopped the treatment.

I look like I have been punched in the head!

Any advice? thoughts? i have sensitive skin so a patch test myself for everything! Why did it not show up?

thanks for you advice! I am hoping to learn from this and am thankful it was not a client!

This happened to me before i think that some of the solution got into my eye as i had a patch test and it turned out fine. Sometimes when people are concentrating to keep their eyes closed they flicker even though they are trying not to move and it just lets some of the solution in or if your eyes water during application and whilst it is developing. I dont know though that was just my conclusion. Have you rinsed your eye out at all or had an eye bath since the reaction occured?

If it is still affecting the inside of your eye and from your description it is pretty bad, I would suggest you call NHS direct and tell them the problem as they may recommend you need to see a doctor asap, or at least they can recommend how you should treat it. I don't want to scare you but if it is swollen and still sore after rinsing you need to get it checked out. We had a warning picture of someone who was blinded by perming solution at my training school and this has made me realise how dangerous it can be if something goes wrong, I'm not saying this is going to happen to you in any way so don't panic but I would seek medical advise.

Just a final thought, did you patch test the glue? Maybe it's that that has caused the reaction if it is just the outside of the eyelid that is affected. x

You could try taking an antihistamine that may help for now.

Another thing is that if the solution goes in the eye then the patch test is irrelevant as it is just testing the reaction on the surface of the skin not under or on the eye and this is why you can still have a reaction if a mistake is made and the solution goes in the eye.

I have also heard (altough this could be wrong) that although you patch test on either the inside of the elbow or behind the ear as they are the more sensitive bits, nowhere is as sensitive as the eye area itself so although you can test in advance there is always the chance that you will react anyway! Sorry! And of course the fact that one can develop an allergy at any time is another factor. All jolly irritating really! Excuse the pun.

As it's only the one eye could you have has a tiny tear in the lid before the solutions were applied or perhaps as the rods were coming off and some residue may have got in there somehow?

Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

thankyou for your responses. I had a rough night but this morning my eyes looked a little better. by this evening they are much better .

I called nhs direct and they suggested various things, I did drop water into the eyes to flush them and it did help a bit.

I think you may be rigthm i think some must have got into my eyes somehow. gosh it really hurt!

And i have been doing some reasearch to look into other to do this treatment, i would hate for one of my clients to get this happen to them. agony!!!!
