I have a small client base of nail clients all of which have P&W every time or a NNO of pink nothing different.

I know this has a lot to do with my geography and age range of the village I live in and in a way this suits me as I cant do any of the arty stuff to save my life.

Who else out there has found the same thing with where they live?
Those who have clients who love arty stuff did you introduce this to them or did they request it?

I did at one point consider doing a nail art course but have decided it isn't worth my time or money as I would never use the skills (a word I use lightly!)
I love to see a beautiful set of P&W to me it beats all the fancy stuff

I have only just started out in nails a few months ago. I have a small client base, and they are mostly french p&w, but recently I bought some arty stuff, rhinestones, glitters etc, and suggested that they have just one nail with a little glitter, or gem etc. I sort of show them what it will look like, and they usually agree to the one nail, the ring finger normally. I say its just like wearing jewellery, and the response has been very good. They are usually tentative at first, but as soon as they see the result, they are really pleased. I have one lady who I suggested it to, message me this morning to say she cannot stop admiring her nails with the nail art on them!!

Next time, I will suggest maybe two fingers, thumb, and ringer finger. I am having a really great time with my little nail business, its the best thing I ever did. The part I love about it is seeing the look of pleasure on clients faces with my work, and I am continually picking up tips, advice, and learning all the time from the lovely geeks on this forum, its fantastic!!

Why not suggest a little gem, or a sheer overlay of glitter, maybe something that will coordinate with their jewellery or ring? x

I used to have mostly pink and whites, but recently the nailart is increasing, I think it's because I always take pics whenever I do art and post them on facebook and my website plus a few sets of pink and whites too. That way those that wants art, locate me by pictures, and also mouth to mouth, BUT a huge thing is that the town I'm in now, has always been a nailart town, don't know how, but nails and hair is a big thing. So I have many requests, and as I always have my nailart boards my P&W usually asks for it when they have seen what I can do. Still I would say It's maybe 50-50 where only 7 or 8 go crazy with loads of art etc... (I guess I have 25-30 clients by now in my new salon, without advertising and starting 2 months ago)

I believe to turn them over you have to be able to do sublte delicate fine art, and not that slap on some stones and flicks etc. I have invested a huge amount of time and practise, so I can do a set with art in a very quick time, so making money, instead of using lots of time on it. And tbh I'm almost about to lower my times on my online booing as I get so much quicker now LOL

added: I actually get most requests for handpainted art with french or subtle glitter tips, the ones that goes crazy is really multicolored glitter, flitter, colors and then handpaint or airbrush...

I have a few for both. Not many for hand painted art, but a few that like a colour or glitter tip. To be honest, i enjoy doing the colourful tips because they get noticed and seem to bring more customers.

I never try to convince customers to have art though, its their choice. I also put my arty pictures on my facebook page and often get 'i want ones like this' when people book.

I always have something a little different myself because i think its good advertising for me but i love a nice set of pink and whites.

To be honest though, i seem to do more porn star looking nails than anything else!!!! Its the look that most people seem to want. My custom mix natural white has yet to be used!!!

I use my custom mix white quite a lot. Those client who want the natural look get a natural look p&w from me.

Karen, I'm based in a village 10miles from my nearest town. My client based is from my local village to as far away as the east coast (approx 50miles).
My clients are a 60/40 split with p&w/glitters & n/art.

My oldest client, who came for a rebalance today (she's 73yrs old) has just gone from a square p&w to an oval 2 colour glitter french with nail art & gems. She has wanted it ever since she 1st came to me 5 wks ago and saw what i was wearing - which is my point.......my clients will stick to p&w, if that's all I ever wore, but I change my nails once per month and they are usually glittery & stuff, it shows what I can do & if I'm wearing it, those clients who like it talk about it, then even have it themselves.

Never been asked for the natural look. Usually get asked for white tips and offer the sculpts instead. But when i offer the 2 different whites they always want the white white.

I've only been released on the general public for a few months though so still plenty of time to get a bigger range in my clients.... and more clients i hope!!!! :D

I would say it's probably about 50/50, but I think that self-promotion possibly has a lot to do with it.

Clients will notice what you are wearing and if they like, they like but if they don't, they don't. That said, some ladies are just content with the routine of the same nails over and over again.

Absolutely agree with Bev. It depends on what you have to offer and what you are wearing yourself or showing via. facebook or on a board or whatever. All my clients began with either pink and whites or natural looking nails and now I do mainly coloured or glitter nails. My clients are fascinated by what I have on my own nails and the little pots of magic I have in my room. It is all a matter of choice, if they like the pink and whites more then who am I to argue. As long as I know that I can produce a beautiful set of whatever my clients want then I will always have a successful business.

I spent a year doing nothing but p&w, they thought they were being different if they had pink and silver flicks.
In the last 6 months or so I've seen more colour creeping in, glitter tips have arrived in Northampton!
That said I know Angel fingers very rarely does p&w and her clients travel miles to come to her for something different.
So yes the clients are out there but how you get the ones who want something a bit different I have yet to discover.
Personally I like a nice natural looking nail or I like to be way over the top with something really bling.
But if that's what a client wants, then I'll give it to them, it may be boring me to tears but business is business.

I forgot to mention) I sometimes do go crazy on the ring finger of one hand, so they get their precious French and one arty/bling nail. And then they are getting braver and braver)) I love doing match the dress nails))) :D

In the last salon I worked at, I mostly only got to do French and full coverage. It bored the life out of me.

Now since I've started working at a new salon, I haven't done a single french yet! Everyone always challenges me to do the most complicated designs... I love it, but at the same time it really wears me out.

I wish there was a middle ground :( Maybe 3 French, 2 Arties for the day!

So do any of you think that a region can play any part on what a client wants?
And what about age groups which ones do you feel are the most likely to go arty?

The thing with were I live is that the nearest big town/city is 45 miles away and they charge between £10/15 more than me, nails is still a new thing with most people only getting them for a special occasion and not wanting to keep them on permanently I find it very difficult to get people to come back.
I have had colours, glitters and shells on my nails in the past with not one person wanting them I personally don't think whatever I wear would make a jot of difference.
Even wearing Minx didn't encourage them :suprised:
