I'm starting pedicures on Thursday and really not looking forward to massaging peoples feet and painting toenails. anyway, what I'm wondering is, is there any tips you can give me to make pedicures more bearable and make them not as bad as I think they are.

Thanks for any help

Hi give the feet a good soak and shield the toe with a tissue when you cut the nails !! a toe nail flew up onto my lip when i started training !! lol it was disgusting !!

There not that bad and massaging can be theraputic for you !!

Breathe through your mouth.
Always soak first, that way you can breathe through your nose.
Use a decent product that makes the job more enjoyable.
Think of the money you will make by making this a fab, really enjoyable service for your clients instead of not offering it as a service.

My Advice - don't get into the industry if you don't do feet!!! Or at least don't tell any clients you don't like doing them.

Think of it this way, all the day to day things that your hands touch / come into contact with........

It's a lot more that what your feet come into contact with!!

I used to be like this before I went on my course!

Basically,,, get over it!! One of my biggest earners is the Pedicure!!
I sold loads throught the summer and have convinced many to continue with a winter treatment once a month.

It's actually really rewarding to see feet that came to you in a bad way and then after a few good treatments, you have this work of art in your lap!! You will soon love them!

Its easy to forget its a foot....and see it as....'Right, let's see what needs doing'.... and then proceed to do it.

I've even got an elderly lady who now comes to me just to have her toes trimmed.
Thats it,,, footsoak and a trim. The first time she came she could hardly walk. I took her shoe off and was shocked at what I found. Toenails so over grown they were wrapping around the toe. I didn't enjoy having to sort them out,, but I did enjoy the look on her face and the hug afterwards!

Good luck with your course and honestly, you will get over your foot fear once you get going!

So are your own feet that bad? Are your friends feet that bad?
The very first thing I do in a pedi is soak the feet, while they are having their soak I do the client consultation.
I'm then dealing with a clean foot, very often far far cleaner then a clients hand.
Most people put their feet into shoes so even if they don't wash as often as I do the foot is protected. Hands however.
Lets take what mine have done today.
Morning bathroom stuff and then washed them. Dog walked poop scooped, picked up and threw spit covered ball more times then I care to count. Patted many other dogs played with other dogs which involves coming into contact with soggy dog toys.
Home clean up then shopping, don't get me started on what is on the shopping trolleys from all those kids who sit in them with their shoes on.
What have my feet done? Gone from my bed to my shower, to my clean towel, moisturizer, then my clean socks and into my shoes, out of shoes into slippers. So whats dirty here? hands or feet?
See its not that bad is it?
The most satisfying part of pedicures for me is when a client has hard skin and I get it all of and they leave me with soft pink skin, square painted nails and a bounce in their step, especially if you can give a good foot massage. just watch the tension drain out of your clients body.

Good old soak with lots of foot wash!
I was the same as you when i started! Hated feet they made my feel sick to think about them. I think you will find you will get used to it. I actually love the treatment now.
Dont worry you will find it more bareable as the weeks go by

Im doing my pedi course at the beggining of next year and i cant wait! I used to hate feet when i was a bit younger but now im so excited about doing this treatment i think i am really going to enjoy it x

To be totally honest, when i first started out 2 years ago ,i said id never ever touch feet  but i had soo many people ask me about doing pedicures i thought i would be stupid if i didnt do a course and learn it ,
I took the plunge and did a course last year and do you know what i actually enjoy doing pedicures now, probably more so than manicures.
I think its because you can see such a difference in the condition of the feet when youve finished.....maybe im just slightly weird cos i enjoy it ,but believe me i hated feet and now it doesnt bother me at all.
Good luck with your course and youll be fine xxxx

I agree, my pedicures are so popular and I enjoy doing them. You will find a lot of people embarrassed about their feet so if you give them any hint that you don't like doing them you will make them feel worse. I also start with a foot soak while doing the consultation then you have nice clean lovely smelling feet and its not a problem. Put your client at ease from the start, do your pedicure, see the smile on your clients face and take their money. They will be back I assure you. x

Fanks guys!!!!!! uve been really helpful and its true what you say about feet being much cleaner than hands. i never thought of it that way. xxxx

I'm sure you'll be fine once you've done a couple of treatments. I wasn't all that enthusiastic when I did my very first 'paid' pedicure as it was on an elderly chap and I have to admit I was a bit 'generous' with the foot soak. He sat for a couple of minutes with the whirlpool going in the foot spa and when I checked the bubbles were rising half way up his legs  I nearly died on the spot. Fortunately he had a cracking sense of humour and I learnt a valuable lesson - always follow the directions for product use :green:
