I am deciding which treatment to offer in my new business - which is more popular? My gut instinct is that peels are more effective but have a scary image; microdermabrasion is well known but has a huge outlay. Any advice?

Peels are more for use with a tailored course of skincare, whereas microdermabrasion is often a standalone treatment. So depends which fits in with your other treatments and preference I think.

From my experience more people are willing to go for microdermabrasion as it's less downtime and they've heard more about it.
But I think what PamieD said is valid has to be something that fits in with your business.
What treatments are you currently offering? What skincare do you use?

Mel :)

Hello, if it is peels your looking for, you should look at Resultime - they have a packaged just for peels.

Skin base do a pay as you go machine and it's fab! We offer exuviance skin peels also which I would recommend... I think it depends what sort of salon you have, peels can be combined with relaxing facials etc.. Microderm isn't really a relaxing treatment but just as effective!

Hi Mel
I am just starting my business specialising in facials and massage. My facial ladies are ready for a more advanced treatment and ideally I would like to offer both microdermabrasion and peels, but cost is a major factor. I would like to use skinceutical products but they are a little out of my price range.

Have a chat to Skinbrands, they do a few peels with some fab cosmeceuticals ... I use Environ, Vitage,Priori Advanced AHA peels and am prob going to take on Medik8 .. Great training and it doesn't break the bank..that is such a myth ... I do believe if you want to increase your knowledge with great support really do your research ... Any company worth their salt will take time to visit you and chat and help come up with what can work for you ...

As Joanne said skin base do a pay as you go version - its good ive used it. Another advantage is that its contained in a metal box so can be moved to different rooms when needed and stored away. Microdermabrasion is a progressive treatments which can be carried out every 10 days (with skin base not sure about other brands)
Peels are more aggressive although results are great. definitely depends on your client base - ive had a few clients who had peels done and they freaked out a bit as they "couldn't leave the house with their face falling off " as one of them said. So recovery is longer definitely with the peels. you should have a scout around and find pricing and ask your clients what they think.......

I have to disagree peels are not more aggressive than MDA! There is no recovery ...

From my experience they have been aggressive, my clients skin was literally peeling off ! Her skin went grey and scaly and started to peel with fresh pink skin underneath. This does not happen with microdermabrasion. Saying that, there are so many types of peels on the market, im sure they all dont have that effect.

That sounds like a medical grade peel. Shouldn't happen with cosmetic grade.

There are many pro's and cons's to both so lets start looking at both.
The below are some but not limited to....

Microdermabrasion
Pro's:
Popular/requested treatment
No downtime
Effective and results show quickly

Cons's:
Potentially expensive out lay
Contra-indicated to certain conditions - sensitive, broken capillaries, inflamed pustular breakouts
Can only achieve certain depths of resurfacing

Chemical Peels
Pro's:
Extremely effective
Progressive strengths for different skin types and conditions
Can be used in places where MDB can't be (see above contra-indications)
Often blended with advanced ingredients to target specific concerns (pigmentation)

Con's:
Can have downtime with contra-actions
Often perceived by clients to be a treatment that will make their skin peel away and 'hang off'

Sorry, yes only strong medical peels will have downtime and nowadays there really isn't the necessity to go to that extreme... Good facials and skincare over time can help skin conditions...

yes I think it was a medical grade. There really no need these days......
