Hi professionals

I have been trying so hard to find someone to do my hair the way my previous hairdresser did and it seems no one understand me.

my old hairdresser bleached my hair and put on my ash blonde colour 7.1

I loved the end result and she explained she makes the colour herself the old school way and never uses a toner.

I don’t wish to dye my hair and then use toner which washes out after a few washes and I’m having to tone it again.

each Time I explain to another hairdresser as my old one has retired they all say a toner has to be used.

please could someone tell me an easier way to explain what I want .
clearly it can be done , my hairdresser was polish and gone back home so can’t go to her.

I suppose what they're doing is correct, because anything that you put over prelightened hair is technically never permanent.
So they're probably going with the idea of a toner because that's what you would normally do.
But technically there's nothing wrong with what your old hairdresser did.
Is your hair naturally really dark?

Sounds like a simple misunderstanding based on your previous hairdresser misinforming you and not explaining the process clearly enough.

When you bleach the hair, you are stripping away some of the natural colour and leaving the hair in its raw state exposing the underlying orange yellow/brassy tones. To finish the lightening process properly, you have to add artificial colour back into the hair to neutralise the brass and leave either a warm or cool tone to the hair.

The re-colouring process is referred to as Toning.
The 7.1 colour product she mixed and applied is ‘toning the hair’.

There is no one product called Toner but several different types of colour products can be used. She may have used a permanent, demi or a semi product to tone the hair afterwards. They each vary in how long they last but essentially you’d choose a demi to tone as a permanent colour wont be permanent when used after bleaching.

Longevity is also determined by the condition of your hair, how porous it is and your own aftercare - heated styling tools, type of shampoo used etc.

The only time you’d not use a toner afterwards is when using a highlift tint as that already contains the artificial colour within the product mix.

What is it my hairdresser has done so I can explain it to other hairdressers.

my hair is naturally dark and then bleached thenfull head highlights.
Your explanation makes sense. She would have used a permanent toner whereas the others are not hence why it keeps washing out

Ok, I think I now understand what you had done. Maybe you can confirm?

I’m guessing you had an all over bleach applied and left for say 30 minutes to lift your hair to a light orange/yellow shade maybe? Then it was rinsed off and your hairdresser afterwards used foils to give you highlights but instead of using bleach, the hairdresser applied a colour mix inside the foils?

Yes.
She highlighted my hair after weaving tiny sections throughout, covered them with foils, left it for however long, washed. I know she used 6% bleach )
Then yes as you said used foil to give me highlights. She used two different colours when highlighting, ash blonde 7.1 and then a darker shade as a base.
Washed and done.

She didn’t use a toner, hairdresser for 40 years and told me what she puts on is permanent and no toner required.

If you can ask your old stylist for your colour record, then that would be ideal, and we can advise further.

Aside this I would reccommend having a consultatoion with a colour specialist so that you can show them photos of what you want, as we all use different products and techniques. In fact you might find you get a better result letting the technican create it with your inspiration rather than asking them to use specific colours.

You’re right,

It isn’t so much me asking for a specific colour it’s me saying dye with a permanent colour . I don’t wish to tone my hair 2 weeks later becasue the colour has faded. Obviously I have to use the right products but my point is it can be done coz my hairdresser did it it’s just no one else seems to know how or understand .

She’s in Poland now so can’t get in touch.

So she highlighted your hair with bleach in foils, used 7/1 in foils and then put a darker base colour in between?
Or did she put the 7/1 on your hair after the highlights?

Which one? 🙈

She bleached using foils
Washed
Then using foils again put 7.1 in and a darker colour in between , washed and then styled.

So the lightest colour in your hair was the 7.1 after it was finished?
It sounds like your hair has been tinted back to a 7.1 after lightening. I'm not really sure why a y other hairdresser can't do this for you.

I’m not sure ronray
It’s really frustrating me because it’s obvious it can be done without the use of a toner as my hairdresser categorically stressed she doesn’t use a toner at al and she mix’s the colour herself.
other hairdressers state they have to use a toner .
The toner business may not be a big deal but it fades after 2/6 weeks whereas what she did it stuck and colour didn’t fade. It was permanent.

It's a shame you're so far away, as I'd love to do a consultation with you.
