Just been reading some threads and would like to ask 'Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a podiatrist and a chiropodist'?

It is my understanding A poidatrist is an expert who specializes in medical care of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. There is an association of podiatrists in the UK.

A chiropodist (term used in the UK) is a foot expert. For fingernail complaints doctors seem to send clients to a dematologist in the UK.

A rather 'loose' explantion for you.

Hi,
Chiropodist has always been the title used in the UK but the term Podiatrist is now growing in popularity. The profession of Chiropody/Podiatry can now only be entered by the route of higher education. It is still possible to train on an open learning basis but the qualification for this in the UK is now a Foot Health Practitioner. A diploma in FHP will allow treatment of most of the common problems associated with the feet so look out in future for this new profession.

Job description

Podiatrists, previously known as chiropodists, are specialists who assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of problems of the foot and lower limb below the knee. These can include minor ailments, diseases and deformities of the feet and lower limbs, for example, bunion operations or metatarsal realignment. Podiatrists also advise patients on how to prevent foot problems in the future.

The term 'chiropody' is still used by some professionals to describe the more routine aspects of podiatry such as nail cutting, the treatment of more minor ailments and minor surgery. Non-state-registered podiatrists are required to describe themselves as chiropodists.
Podiatry is a relatively new term for the treatment of foot disorders. Pod is Greek for foot and iatros, doctor - hence the name Podiatrist or foot doctor!
