Evening all! I'm sooo glad I've found this site to reassure/advise me!

As a newly qualified Beauty Therapist (Beauty Specialist Level 2 - I've gone the mobile route) I'm still not overly confident in my abilities - however getting there slowly!!!

Just had a client for a pedicure and found the application of varnish on her big toe really really hard!! The varnish did not glide on, but kind of got soaked up by her toe nail if that makes sense??!!!!! The rest of her toes were fine though. Her big toe nails were quite flakey/dry so im assuming this was the cause.

I really wasn't happy with the finished result on the big toes - although the client seemed happy - we really are our own worst critics sometimes I know!

Has anyone else had this problem? If so how did you resolve it?

Any advice very gratefully received :green:

Cheers all.x

Hi

Did you use a base coat?

If a client has dry toe nails like that.. all you need to do is buff it slightly with a very soft buffer and shiner (you know the ones.. usually 3 way) then apply a base coat or better still a ridge filler base and you'll find your polish will go on like a dream and the nails will last much longer without any flaking or chipping.. hope this helps:)

Sometimes I've noticed my clients having white patches on their toenails. Is this what you're describing? Sometimes these are due to formaldehyde (sp?) sensitivity. I didn't know this, but OPI and other nail polishes still have this ingrediant in their products. So on those kind of clients I use a non-formaldehyde base coat and eventually this white patch grows off. But until then, all you can do is buff it smooth.

BUT if it is just dryness, try different base coats on the person until you find one that matches her chemistry. I've found that some strengtheners are more drying then others. And don't use a dehydrator nail prep on her either, because this might be drying them out too. Just clean the nail REALLY well with a nurturing non-acetone remover and then apply polish.

Hope this helps!

If it's very dry I tend to apply two layers of base coat, as the first can end up being absorbed by the nail, which results in the colour sitting on & staining the nail plate. It's for this reason I use Jessica treatment base coats!

Hi - yes orly base bonder - looking at other threads maybe I should have applied x2 coats/or used ridge filler. I guess this is where experience is something you can't buy!!!

forgot to say thanks for your replies! cheers all - really great site
