hello

does this sound like a bad idea/too confusing?

i was thinking of offering different rates to people depending on how many wanted the tan at the same time and place.

something along the lines of

1 person tan = £20
(you) + 1 or 2 other people = £18 per tan
(you) + 3 or 4 or 5 other people = £15 per tan and you get yours free
(you) + 6+ other people = £10 per tan and you get yours free

i have been researching what other people charge and what people require for a party/discounts to apply and the majority of the time people only get a free tan when there is 5 or 6 people and anything below that is full price of £20. so i wanted to offer something different, something that meant people who couldn't get a big group together could still bennefit from a discount. i've worked out profits (the only thing i haven't included in costs is fuel costs of going to and from clients, but i can't imagine that making that much of a difference that it wouldn't be profitable) and there is still a good amount of profit - even at the £10 per tan. although it isn't as high as the single tans at the end of the day there is 6 people as walking adverts, which works out at a cheaper form of advertising than other methods i have priced up.

is that an absolutely stupid idea?

Looking at your prices, you would make less money for a party of 6 than a party of 5?

Which means the only people that benefit are the clients, as you'd be making less money but using more product and time.

Hey,

When i was sorting out my price list i had the same idea as you but in the end it was just so confusing, i gave the prices to a couple of friend to look at and it took them a second read to understand properly so i decided to keep it simple. You could however use your discretion and offer discounts to existing clients if THEY have a tan party and the same if their friends then book parties with you. Just an idea. This also makes your client feel extra loved hence great recommendations.

Also..... like previous geek mentioned just be careful your not giving to much discount for a larger party.
I hope this helps and Good luck xxxx

my thought was that people would see the more the cheaper it is, which would save me time and money in the long run (eg. setting up before spraying, driving to and from different clients, also things like gloves and masks and aftercare leaflets) also, there is an extra person to talk to about other treatments i offer/will be offering in the future aswell as to talk to about products to help with their tan and there is also another person walking around advertising a tan from me.

i wasn't too sure if it was too complicated or not. i really want potential clients to see that they really are getting a good deal and the more people that i can offer the service to the better. especially as i am just starting out. so hard trying to work out costs of advertising, each product then adding time into the mix and trying to find a price that's competitive aswell as enough to make it worth your while. i guess i'll find it all in the end.

I think it's a little too confusing and that you are vastly underpricing yourself. I see what you are saying about one set up and it being advertising......but as as client I may begrudge paying £20 for a tan when it's clear from your prices that you can do it for £10 IYKWIM??

At the moment I offer my standard price....then tan with a friend with discount (which works out at 20% off full price) And tanning parties where hostess gets free tan with 5 paying guests (again the guests pay the 20% off price) so everyone gains.......therefore the biggest discount I'm giving is the 20%, but the hostess gets the bonus for getting everyone together.

everybody keeps telling me i am underpricing myself lol, obviously extra money is always a good thing so long as i'm earning something it's better than nothing in my opinion. to be honest it's mainly so that i can just say i have done something in life, rather than 'just' being a mum. so long as i can cover the costs i've paid for equipment and training then i'm happy, anything else is a welcome bonus :) i guess it's agreed that pricing is too confusing.

i thought that too about clients being put off, i was hoping that would work in the opposite way that clients would go and get their friends together for maximum discount though. i LOVE your idea of pricing. straight forward and still everyone bennefits.

i've honest to god been going over all the websites that i can find, getting price lists from salons in my area, reading threads on here about advertising and costs and popular treatments etc talk about over load haha

I think we've all done the same.......we are lucky that we have found Salon Geek and bounce our ideas off others who have the benefit of experience.....in effect we can learn from their mistakes.
I know what you are saying about not wanting to make loads of money....I'm in a similar position......but why tan 20 clients to make the less money than you could tanning 10??? It's called working smarter.........often pricing yourself too cheap dissuades the good clients as they want a quality job and are prepared to pay a little more...you get what you pay for!!! The ones who want the cheapest are not loyal clients. Keep your prices at a reasonable level, you can always offer the odd discount here and there, and the clients you do this for will feel special.

I charge £20 for a full body tan and if there are 2 or more people I do it for £18 each - a 10% discount.

Most of my clients are happy that they are getting it a little cheaper by getting a friend to have a tan at the same time.

Then if I get a big group, ( I have 12-13 girls for a prom this month) I quote on the individual circumstance. In this case i'm doing tans for £17 each person as there are so many of them and it's not the 1st time they have had it done either so I know it keeps them coming back.

I only ever offered tans for £10 when I 1st set up and wanted to build a client base, but most of those people who got a tan for £10 when I started out didn't want to pay £20 when I was confident enough to charge full price and haven't had a tan since.

But, I now have clients who have a weekly tan and are prepared to pay £20 as they like the service I offer and prefer to get a quality result rather than pay less and not get the service and result they are used to.

I have a very profitable business and clients keep coming back so it really goes to show you don't need to offer tans at such a low price, I know I'm not the cheapest technician in the area, but it doesn't stop me from getting a lot of business - I do around 40-50 tans a month - part time!

Don't underprice yourself, it really doesn't do you any favours in the long run, and it's difficult to put your price up once you drop it so low.
