I am looking for help in pricing for box braids, cornrows etc for both Caucasian and Afro hair. How
Is best to price these as I've had varying advice! Does
Anyone here offer this service that can give me some advice please :)

Depends how long it takes, if it's same as blowdry time charge blowdry price or increase if longer to your cbd price. Just work out how much you could have made by doing other services in that time and charge the equivalent.

Hi, for box braids depending on hair I'd charge around these lines:

if the hair is thick or the client wants thick braids (requiring over 5 packs) charge then around 40£ depending how long they take too, charge them 60£ if it takes over 6 hours to do

if they want long braids charge them 30£ standard then 15£ for every hour after 4 hours, so for 8 hours charge 80-90£

if they want about 2-3 packs just charge 30£

for cornrows if you can do them within an hour on a full head charge £25-35+

are you ethnic? if so the prices above are standard, and add on an extra 5-10 for caucasian because the hair is thinner so they'll require more packs for thickness and braiding caucasian hair can be more time consuming/more of a struggle when you're used to your own type of hair *afro/ethnic*

if you're caucasian other way around :p

and if they want more than one colour charge them 5-10 quid for each colour, so say you're charging them 30 for black and they decide they'd like some red too charge an extra 5-10 for that pack of hair

£80 for 8 hours work, bugger that I'd rather stay at home, as daydreams said charge what you would make at your regular hourly rate I.e cut & blowdry price, in 8 hours in a salon you can make at least £300 doing colours, think of the money your missing out on because your braiding all day

yes but do you know how much braiding hair actually costs? 80 quid is actually standard in most places, and 6-8 hours is average time for them

Don't start with me again now, I'm trying to help the op

if it costs more than 80 quid i can guarantee she wouldnt get many customers because the hair is readily available at any ethnic shop and it is EXTREMELY cheap and is the most used type of hair (xpressions) and many black girls or their mothers know how to do them, the salon just makes it less hassle and they wouldn't mind paying around 80 because they last for months (well. 2 months is the longest u should keep a single set in then take them out and wash the hair correctly, detangle and then re-apply if wanted)

So your saying £80, does that includes time it takes to do them and the hair? Because if it does op would be making next to nothing then when they could of had colours back to back for the full day

Yes laur @Lauren121 that's what he's saying

@Daniel Williams im not a noob in this industry darling, far from it, at 9 years old I was box braiding for money, there you go again trying to teach the proverbial granny to suck eggs....

See now you're getting at me, I didn't say anything wrong to you, I'm telling you what people are usually paid for box braiding in a salon.... no need for abuse

The hair is under XX to buy, it's kanekalon synthetic, and i agree its next to nothing, but that's what you pay for that type of service, if she was doing colour ofcourse she'd make more money but it's an entirely different service :p

the price of the hair is usually around £XX TOTAL for say, 5-8 packs of hair, depending where you get it from, price is very cheap in a black shop though, and many do use the same hair found in there because it's the most common thing ever in the black community (honestly) so you're charging upwards if that for the time it takes, and it's not much but at the same time think about it reasonably if it's £XX for the hair which is the end result if you're paying SO much more to get it installed what is going to make them go to you (braid artist) over their black (I'm using black as the majority of the people who get these braids are ethnic/black) grandmother or mother who probably can do the exact same job without charging them anything (other than the price for the hair if they haven't brought it already)? I'm not being mean or rude, I'm being genuine, Like we can compare it to other services all we/you like but that's like comparing a red bra to a green shoe, they're two different things altogether, some people can do the braids in 3-4 hours if taking large sections, but that uses more hair because you have to match the thickness to the section and each pack is 165g(?) but can be cut in half as it's 82(?) inches long, and some like small or tiny braids (micro braids) which use less hair but take longer to do because sections are much smaller and thinner (self explanatory but putting this out there anyway) x thanks for reading

* (?)= i think

It depends a lot on your area. Have a nosey about and see what others charge xx

Yeah i get where your coming from Daniel but people who do braids as the main service will obviously be able to do it a lot quicker than say me who does more colours than anything, therefore they can charge the lesser rate as they get more people in in the time frame. that's why most people say think what you can do in the space of time it takes you to do a blow dry say or a cut and blow. If someone wants to go tO you for your work they will pay whatever it costs as long as it's reasonable. There would be no point in offering a service if it's not profitable.

To the OP I would work out how popular the service is going to be and hoe long each different one will take you look at your prices already and compare them to say your blow dries/cut and blows and go from there. I would also research other salons that do similar services to you (not one that just specialises in braids) and see what they charge. It could be just a trail and error to see how you get on with the structure you set. X

It's the same for fitting extensions in my eyes, I spend 1 hour of time fitting I'll charge £20 because it's my cut fee cutting is the cheapest service in my shop & it takes 1hour so I charge £20 per hour for non colour related work :)

£80 for 8 hours work? That is literally mad. £10 ph, if you deduct costs such as hair, tools, rent, insurance, etc you are making less than minimum wage. I wouldn't even consider it, as most would say. Even from a customer perspective, I would be concerned about the quality of work for that price.
