PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector)

What is PTLLS award?

PTLLS award is a nationally recognised qualification for anyone wishing to teach or train in the lifelong learning sector (non compulsory education). PTLLS is currently the industry benchmark and minimum requirement for people who want to work as trainers. It is a stepping stone to achieving the Certificate or Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS and DTLLS). The actual qualification is accredited by VTCT and is called Level 3 or 4 award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector,

How is the training delivered?

Firstly you will have in initial assessment with your mentor in a Virtual Meeting room, he or she will provide a Personal Learning Plan, (PLP) that will help you complete the online learning course (Moodle), consisting of 8 modules

After the completion of each module, you are required to complete and submit an assignment.

You will also complete a scheme of work, lesson plan and micro teach.
The subjects covered on the Moodle are:

  • The Role of the Teacher
  • Responsibilities and Boundaries
  • Teaching
  • Learning
  • How to do Lesson Planning
  • How to complete a Scheme of Work
  • Evaluation, Feedback and Review
  • Policies, procedures and codes
  • Record Keeping
  • How to deliver inclusive and motivating learning
You are allocated a mentor who win be able to answer any questions. She/he will contact you within 48 hours of registering to introduce him/herself. You may contact your mentor at any time to ask questions and get advice throughout the course. Your mentor will also be the person to mark your assignments.

Once you have completed the Moodle and completed all your assignments, you will complete the micro teach. Your mentor will then help you with your assignments which is submitted for internal and external verification.

What is the micro teach? This involves presenting a 15 minute teaching session you will also evaluate other teaching sessions.

How long does it take?

You can complete the course within 2 weeks, fulltime or 4 weeks part time. The Guided Learning Hours for this course is 40 hours. The micro teach takes 15 mins.

What happens afterwards? Once you have completed the course, you will be able to teach people in the non-compulsory education sector. You can then progress onto the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning sector (CTTLS) and then the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTTLS).

This is a 12 credit qualification.
