Recent trends in nail industry by Margarita Belska.

The Nail industry at the moment is vibrant with many exciting new products and techniques being introduced. In general, there is a visible shift away from artificial nails and towards the natural nail care. Extending nails is less popular as clients opt for growing their own nails. This explains the popularity of the most recent products that you may have already come across. New nail techniques are described below.

Gel Nails
Gel polishes have only recently entered the market, but have taken it by storm quickly. I do understand why, as it is a revolutionary product that looks great and lasts long. If you have not come across it yet, it is a gel-polish hybrid, which you apply in almost identical way to a nail polish. The only major difference is that you need to cure it in UV lamp and it will dry to an instant strength in seconds. This is so great, not only because it saves drying time, but also because it will not smudge or chip and will look great for up to 3 weeks. Gel polishes come in many different colours, as well as in clear and French. You can do designs with gel polish in a similar way to a nail polish and they can easily be applied on top of extended nails too. Looks as a nail polish, lasts as a gel. Fantastic!
This product is a big threat to nail extensions as it takes less time to apply, last the same time and cost wise is very profitable. Applying gel polish would take up to 30 mins for experienced technician and would cost between £ 20.00 – 45.00 per application. Any qualified manicurist can apply gel polish, however manufacturer’s instructions need to be followed thoroughly for best results.

Nail Foils or Wraps
You have probably already heard about nail foils, these are well loved by celebrities and general public alike. Nail foils will provide you with an instant, exciting design or a completely metallic finish. In simple terms, they are foil stickers, that are softened with the help of heat and shaped to suit your nail, then firmly applied onto a nail and within an instant, head turning designs are done in minutes. This is especially used for parties, as within the wide range of nail foils you are bound to find one that will suit your dress pattern or the colour of your favourite shoes. This is a great addition to both beginner technicians and highly experienced techs as it will provide you with quick, simple and shiny design. In general foil application will take 30 – 40 minutes and will cost between £15.00 – £45.00. Foils can last up to 4 weeks on feet and up to 1 week on hands. Nail Foils can be applied on natural nails and extended nails. Application is simple, but again, manufacturer’s advice needs to be followed thoroughly.

One Stroke Nail Painting
Foils designs are not the only head turners in nail industry at the moment. We have also been recently introduced to the most artistic technique in nails – one stroke painting. This of course is widely used technique in art, however now we are also transferring this onto nails and clients absolutely love it! One stroke painting on nails is achieved using a small flat brush and acrylic paints, which are mixed, turned and twisted in all sorts of ways to create designs beyond belief.

Do not worry if you are not particularly the most artistic person in the world, with the right technique, education and practice everyone will be able to master this technique and showcase the hottest designs in the industry at the moment.

You could be charging up to £5 more for each nail you do a one stroke on, which would take approximately 10 – 15 minutes. Training is needed to acquire this technique and will cost between £100 – £200.
