I'm having trouble recruiting and feel it may be something to do with the way I advertise. I have tried both brief and lengthy advertisements and the only responses get are from people not qualified for the position, students and college leavers. Can anyone offer up any advice or opinions about the following advert?

I've tried a few different websites, such as Indeed and Gum Tree, can anyone recommend a site they have had particular success with as I'm now at a loss!.

Contract: Full time. 32 - 40 hours per week.
Salary: According to ability and experience.

We are a small, boutique day spa in south London offering a range of luxurious beauty treatments and spa therapies with the emphasis on a more holistic approach. We specialise in natural and organic skincare and everything we do is focused on ensuring our clients have a 5* treatment on every visit.

We are looking for an experienced spa therapist to join our growing team. It would be advantageous if you have a passion for natural skincare but full training is given on all our product lines. We hold regular in-house training and development on subjects such as advanced massage techniques, cosmetic formulation, skincare techniques etc, as maintaining high standards through education is essential to both our therapists and clients. You will also be required to carry out some reception duties such as answering the telephone and taking bookings, full training is provided on our booking system, however, some experience of using a computer would be helpful.

We would love you to have a mature and nurturing outlook towards both your colleagues and clients, a strong sense of professional decorum is required and an excellent command of the English language essential.

Please not this position is not suitable for college leavers.

We require ;

An NVQ level 3 or equivalent beauty therapy qualification.
Minimum of 2 years spa/salon experience (this does not include time spent in a college salon).
A detailed and sound understanding of anatomy and physiology.
Mature personality.
Good working knowledge of a luxury spa environment.
Experienced retailing ability.
Immaculate personal presentation.
Outstanding customer service skills.
You must be eloquent and literate.
Ability to work weekends and evenings.

You must be able to carry out the following treatments ;

Strip and hot waxing
Intimate waxing
Facials
Massage
Manicures and pedicures
Tinting
Electrical facial and body treatments (most importantly galvanic, high frequency and faradic)
Manual tanning
Body wraps and scrubs
Indian head massage
Make-up

We would prefer that you have an electrolysis qualification but for an exceptional candidate training can be provided.

Qualifications in the following are preferred but training can be provided for the right applicant ;

Semi-permanent eyelashes
Pregnancy massage
Deep tissue massage
Hot stone massage
Reflexology

What we offer ;

Excellent commission on retail and treatment sales.
Regular training.
Uniform and footwear provided.
Skincare allowance.
Excellent development, training and promotion opportunities.

I'm going to assume that there is something in this ad that is really putting people off and you lovely people are all too polite to say anything. I know it's long but I've also tried short ones of about three sentences and still nothing, I think I'm doomed never to find an experienced therapist!. It wasn't like this 20 years ago, grumble, mutter, old lady ranting.......

I think the issue is a vast majority of all experienced people run their own businesses and are self-employed nowadays. I have a pet project in the works for some time to help rent out spaces and fill recruitment. I know it doesn't help you now but wanted to wish you the best of luck :)

I agree. When I wanted to work in a salon after qualifying everybody wanted years experience. Now I have years experience id rather work for myself :). Good luck finding someone!

I have 20 years salon and spa experience
And wouldn't meet all of your criteria!
That's quite some list

Thank you so much for your feedback. The list is how everyone left college when I trained there were no options it was all or nothing, I think training has changed drastically since I went to college 400 years ago. I don't even get many responses when I try just a few brief sentences. I shall remove my lengthy ad and see what happens! Lack of applications on all levels is beginning to make me regret opening my own business.

That is one of the reasons I don't want a salon
To many problems getting really good therapists

Maybe you could put instead of
"Must be able to carry out the following treatments"

You could say
Must be qualifified to carry out the following treatments.. Refresher training is possible?

When I first qualified I work at a residential spa for 3 years and didn't do waxing there
So although I was qualified I needed to build up speed again when I went back to a salon

And make up can be quite specialised, I have a make up qualification but I don't do enough of it to keep up with current trends etc..

Indian head massage wasn't included in my training either

Yep, as an experienced therapist currently not working in the field I completely agree with the idea of offering refresher training.

A main reason why I left beauty and started working solely for myself was due to businesses wanting "perfect" therapists, to pay low wages and take a lot but not give anything back. Zero real training whilst I earned them what seemed a fortune and often ran the business for them.

That sort of relationship seems unfair as it is and would never apply somewhere I thought would end up like that.

Hi

How's this project going?
Hiya.

Yeah, it's still 'going' as they say lol. It's difficult finding the time to work on it at the moment as I get married next weekend.
Need to think of a name for it and more than likely just get it out there for people to start using.

I was still unsure if it's something people would use so I've stopped about 80% through development.

Firstly congratulations on getting married!

And re your project, I think it's a much needed thing IMHO. I guess getting it out there with enough people using it is key.

One of my Salon clients is struggling to get chair renters in edinburgh and has used all the channels everyone has mentioned in this post. So he'd definitely use your solution!

Anyway, enjoy your honeymoon!
:)

Thank you very much :)

You have spurred my thoughts back into as it's sat on the back burner for a long time. I'm not allowed to advertise it on here or I'll get a slap on the wrist but when it's up and running, if it's ok with you, I'll drop you a message to take a look :)

Glad to hear it!
Yes indeed-send it over when you're ready
:)

First of all - massive congrats Bannerpenguin!

I think your idea is great. I offer better than average salaries, a number of incentives and a nice environment and yet I still struggle to find quality therapists even using paid recruiters, so I'd be really interested to know more!

Thanks for the positive vibes :)
It does REALLY help spur me on and lets me know I'm on the right tracks.
