Just had a letter from HMRC, they've advised I'll shortly be receiving a notice requiring me to complete a tax return.

i only started trading on 24.5.12??

I don't understand - i didn't think I needed to do anything 'til year end?

sleepless nights ahead me thinks...

They will be referring to the 2012-2013 tax year.

Basically for you it'll be anything relating to the period of the inception of your business (24th May) to the end of the tax year (5th April) - should be nice and straightforward!!

I'm confused, isn't 24 may 2012 in the tax year 2012/13?

No it's for 2011 to 2012 :)

I am so confused? I also think that may 2012 is in tax year 2012-2013? Thought the tax year is April to April?

You wont have to do a tax return until next year, if you're confused just give them a ring, they wont expect anything this year because you were not self employed until after April 1st. This year we will be sending in our tax returns for April 11 - end of March 12, you were not trading then :)

That's what I thought, I questioned it on this thread but still told it was in last year's tax year.
I know some geeks are trying to help, but wish they would read posts properly before replying, especially on this subject. Just the thought of having to sort my accounts right now gave me heart palpitations... Lol!

On phone to HMRC, 20mins of listening to on-hold music so far.... :-(

Ok, finally got thru to a nice young man who advised that the tax return will be sent NEXT APRIL!!! The letter I received is just giving me advanced notice. I politely told him maybe the letter could have been clearer to have saved me a 25 min wait on the phone. Grrrrr.....

That's why I said it was from the previous 12 months i.e you won't have to do anything. I wasn't giving you duff information !

dont worry hun honestly, when it comes round to doing it next year you wont believe how straight forward it is as long as you have kept record of everything....i did mine this year and have to say it was a piece of cake!!x

hun, my comment wasn't aimed at you, it was aimed at the geek who has since edited her post to put the correct tax year in as she initially put 2011/12 - she has since corrected it to 2012/13 (you know who you are!)

sorry if you thought it was you! xx

Ah right! sorry bout that then, I can see who you mean now lol xxx :)

Apologies - it was a typo , I did actually write the it was an edit when I did the edit, for some reason it hasn't shown up. I am sorry. Please delete my post as I didn't mean to cause offence or confusion.

They sent me a letter like that too a couple of years ago when I did some freelance work. It took me ages to get through to them as well only for them to say oh no don't worry until next year!!
