Can anyone let me know what they think about renting a space in a local salon? I'm thinking of trying it but have no idea what conditions etc are normal. Such as once i pay my rent to them would i be expected to pay a share of bills ie phone, electric or is this normally included? Also would i have to book my own appointments in or would their receptionist also deal with my clients? Hope someone can help me - if I have made any sense that is!!!

The most important thing for you to remember when making a move like renting is that A CONTRACT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK BOTH WAYS.

When you find out the terms and conditions when you talk to the salon (because they all differ) if you do not like some of them or want to alter some of them .. SAY SO. It's not all one sided.

No one can tell you what is normal or what to expect because there is no such thing as normal. Each owner wants different things.

Read their terms carefully or listen to them and then go home and think about it. Do not be afraid to speak up and say what you want. You're entitled if you are paying the rent to have a say. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that most owners are willing to negotiate a deal.

The next most important thing is to get any kind of contract looked at by a solicitor. It may cost you some money, but it will cost you allot more NOT to do it.
 
Hiya,, im renting a space in a hairdressers at the mo, my only advice is to make sure you have some tenancy agreement to cover you and the landlord.. I pay my landlord a percentage of my takings each week which covers all bills. I tend to use my own mobile for calls tho. The good thing about giving a percentage is that on quiet weeks i dont have to pay an arranged fee which helps when just starting out...

I do not like percentages. Straightforward rent for me. It may seem good starting out but when you are pulling in 1000 or more a week it doesn't look so good anymore. Think Future. Have confidence in yourself. If you have it, then think of the long term not the short.
 
sooo glad you said about straight forward rent, i have just got myself a room today in a lovely salon and asked for £20.00 a day rent, i have read up alot on salon geek and didnt know if this was a bit of an old fashioned way of doing it ! :rolleyes:

Im going into a hairdressers on a rent a room basis, mine is rent free for 3 months then moves up in manageable steps.

Could you not try to negotiate something like that.

Then at least when you are up & running and earning good money you are not losing so much.

Although you have to be careful because on quieter weeks you have to be able to cover the whole of your rent.

Thanks for all your advise, will definitely go for a standard rent rather than percentage. Just need to find somewhere now!!
