Hi everyone!

Ive been a member for quite a while now but have never posted before so hope i'm doing everything the right way!

I'm finally about 3 months away from opening my own salon in Hornchurch essex and wondered what would be the best way to go about getting staff. Can anyone tell me of their experiences, good and bad, of hiring newly qualified staff? Also employment vs them renting the space? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I will be looking for a CND trained full time Nail Tech who can do acrylics, gels & shellac
a full time Semi Permenant Lash Tech who can do natural lash right up to 10D lashes if need be and uses Flirties products
a full time hairdresser who loves to do fancy and crazy wedding hair

if you know of anyone looking then please ask them to get in contact!
if they have their own clients to bring then fantastic and local would be good but not a requirement.

Thank in advance guys x

Getting staff is one of the hardest things in the industry and as you’re 3 months away I’d start looking now as you still may not find them in time.

You have a very particular list of requirements and these kinds of people normally work for themselves or elsewhere so you’ll need to offer a very attractive wage.

The common consensus on newly qualified people mostly don’t meet the criteria to carry out quality treatments straight away and takes the owner about a year to train them up to standard as the level of teaching is very low these days.

If you want to control what hours your staff work, products they use, prices they charge etc. then you have to employ them properly, pay national minimum wage, tax, NI, etc.

If they’re renting a chair you’re a landlord and nothing else. They can offer whatever treatments they like, charge what they want, come and go as they please and work any days/take off as much time as they want but of course, you still get paid your monthly rent.

I don’t hear very often of beauty and hairdressing doing well in the same place as a relaxing environment isn’t the same as a busy hairdresser environment. Hairdressers are much harder to employ as most will be self employed already or will only rent a chair. Wedding hair is quite specialist too so chances are they’ll be doing that in their own business already.

I hope that helps :)

That is very helpful thank you so much x

After much consideration following your comments I have decided to stick with what I know and love which is beauty. After reading previous forums regarding salon set ups I thought I would try and squeeze a bit of everything in to maximise profit but I don’t wish to do this to the detriment of my clients! So the hair and nails are out and I will only require a full time level 3 beautician who is a trained lash addict to rent space. If anyone is in the Essex area and would like more info then pls let me know and we can have a chat

Thanks again for the advice it is much appreciated x
