Hi ya Geeks

Been to the dentist today with a rotten 1/2 tooth, the dentist is adament that he will save the tooth with root canal.

Now I have read a lot of reviews, most of which say its nothing but trouble and always opt to have extraction.

I am on anti-bios for the week....

Anyone had root canal?

I think I would rather have an extraction & veneer fitted? Has anyone had this?

Would you seek a 2nd opinion?

Any advice or reviews would help a great deal Geeks.

Thankyou xx

I had one and had endless problems - I must have had (no kidding) over 15 appts with one tooth. I eventually had it removed about 4 weeks ago and I feel so much better - wished I had it done earlier and saved all the agro and cost! Because no one can see the gap I have decided not to have an implant. Good luck with whatever you choose.
ps - I did get a 2nd opinion and they also told me to get it removed.

my hubby had a root canal on thursday, he went in at 8:30am and was back at work at 12. Hes quite happy so far, not sure about long term but it better last a very long time because he cost £650 !!! Hubby said that hurt more :)

I've had 2! It is time consuming as in it normally requires anything up to 3 or 4 seperate visits and of course it's very expensive. However I would never opt to lose a tooth instead. Take the pain - it looks better.

I had root canal work. My own fault-pure vanity. Had a tiny little filling and insisted on having it replaced with a white one. White ones don't last as long and kept falling out and everytime i had it replaced they would have to drill a little more tooth away. Anyway got an abcess and infection and had to have root canal.
I don't know why everyone goes on about the pain! I didn't even have an anaesthetic. Had it done and never had any problems with it!
I, like Pure would never want to lose a tooth if there is a chance it could be saved

I have had a root canal and an extraction (which I chose to leave as a gap as its not noticeable).
The root canal did not hurt as most people think-although I dont thin I could cope without any pain relief!

A root canal cost me £45 as it falls into band B on the NHS-so I was shocked to read you paid £650 Highhopes!

Personally, if the dentist is sure the tooth can be saved, I would opt for the root canal, if you start to develop problems further down the line you can always have it removed, but at least you tried the filling in the first instance.

Thanks Geeks......scaring myself to death lol

Ive been quoted 198.00 to include a crown....this is NHS price...

Now thinking about all this....

Does this seem normal...

I sit in dentist chair.

He looks in my mouth.

Pokes my tooth with his finger (no tools or mirrors).

Tells me I have a pretty face and doesnt want to remove my tooth when it can be reconstructed (1/2 rotted, the inside has rotted away).

Prescribes anti bio's & painkillers.

Books me in for root canal next week.

Should I have been x-rayed or is this the norm????

Im getting quite concerned now, as well as feeling really sick with the anti bio's & painkillers.....

& im still in a lot of pain...

Right young lady hear this good and hear it proper:eek::lol:

I have had a root canal treatment on my lower back tooth...yes it was painstaking, and yes i was pain killers and such forth before....but it was worth it...if there is a dentist that is willing to save the tooth this is always the best option to do...really it is.

I was viscously attacked many years ago, while i was living in Rome, and partially lost a tooth...the dentist that i saw at the time, would not save it,even though it was healthy, and it was extracted...i was gutted....and had to have a veneer much later...so the moral of the story is...if the dentist can save it...then you are in the hands of a good dentist...end of:!::hug:

I didn't have an x-ray when i had my root canal.
I do think it was blatantly obvious what i needed done though. I was in absolute agony with it and ended up in a hospital god knows where.
We had been on a day out to Thorpe park and was on the motorway on the way back when the pain started-isn't that bloody typical?!
Had to get off at the next exit and my husband was driving round like a loony looking for a hospital with me bawling my eyes out.
If they had offered to take the tooth out then, i would have jumped at the chance!
So glad they never. Had some marvellous pain killers from the hospital-completely spaced me out. Much cheaper than a night on the town :)
It was the abcess that was causing the pain though. Once i had finished my course of antibiotics i was ok.
The nerves effectively die so there is no blood supply to the tooth so the actual root canal work really wasn't painful at all.

Well I really do have a phobia of dentists, have done all my life, but have been seeing a different, younger one the past couple of years :). and hes fab.
I've had to have root canal work and was horrified at the thought of it ( lower front tooth), but to my surprise it was fab, the only part I didn't like was the numbing injection, I hate needles in my mouth, but the work was great, apparently he was having to use the longist drill bit for the job, and it still wasn't quite long enough , but all is fine now, and I dont have any problems with it.

Go for it,

I had a couple of root canals done in 2005, and neither were a lot of pain; the toothache before having them done was a lot worse! The first one didn't take much time at all; the dentist was playing Classic FM on the radio, and it was all done during the final movement of Elgar's Cello Concerto (about 10 or 12 minutes long)...

And the second one I didn't even need anaesthetic for, as most of the pulp had been taken out at a previous appointment, and I'd had a temporary filling in place for a number of weeks...

I had a root canal done in January - I had two x-rays taken so that they can see where the nerves run - how any dentist can do this treatment without x-rays is beyond me - they will be probably done on the day.

Most of the treatment was done in the same day but they do advise that you have a crown put on top to protect it as some people can have problems with teeth breaking as they have had so much work done.

I havent gone back for the crown as they do them in gold and I really dont want a gold tooth - it is bad enough having a large filling but at leas the side of my tooth is white LOL.

They can do white crowns but they are more expensive and loss durable.

As others have said, if it can be saved then it is better than a hole, depending on which tooth obviously.

If I had a problem with a very back tooth then I dont think I would do it again.

I am sure all dentists can give slightly differing treatments and outcomes. I also dont understand how someone could go through that treatment without pain relief - you must be made of steel LOL.

I have had two root canals done since november due to abcesses. They did not take x-rays before hand but they did during the treatments to see where the nerves were (they use something that feels like a very thin file to take all the nerves etc out I presume - it does not hurt). They are time consuming if done properly, and take around 3 to 4 visits to complete and mine cost around £600 for each but they did not hurt and compared the the infection was a complete relief. I have been going to my dentist for over 20 years and he uses his fingers alot which it quite often more gently than someone banging away with metal instruments.

I have to agree, I felt really terrible whilst taking anti-biotics and needed two courses with each abcess in the end. The side effects of these were worse than anything the dentist did, but you need to take them unfortunately as the infection needs to be treated completely before they seal any tooth.

I would much rather keep my teeth if poss. I had a root canal done years ago and it is still fine. I am not the most trusting person in the world due to a lot of very bad experiences with my son and the medical profession, but I trust my dentist 99% (no such thing as 100% for me I'm affraid, but I have known him a very long time and he treats my children too.) If you are any doubt and uncomfortable, seek another opinion if only to put your mind at rest.

Good luck xx

Just to add a piece of advice. My tooth probably was not suitable for RC - I found out later that my dentist said I had very deep roots and they were curved making them much harder to fill properly. Very curved roots can only be filled for certain under a microscope at a specialist dentist.

I would ask whether you have a good success rate of getting the roots properly filled and yes you should have x-rays! I think this is also where the pain factor comes in - I had loads of anaesthetic but as they were so deep I could still feel it.

Ask lots of questions and yes even a second opinion - that should help you make a informed decision. :)

Thanks everyone.....im still in agony & have a full book of appointments for the next 3 days .....

Im going to stick with the dentist and hope this pain get better with the anti bio's & pain killers.....

Got a huge school renunion on sat in essesx and hvnt seen some of these people for over 20 years...& i wont be able to drink...not one single drop of alcohol.....
