Hello Forum,

I've opened my salon 2 months ago and it's been okay so far, I know i'll have a few quiet days like any other business but in the summer I hope to be really busy.

I work full time being self employed and work with a self employed nail tech on a profit share basis as together we are growing our client base. I do nearly everything beauty wise and my nail tech does waxing and tinting in addition to nails so it's a really good partnership.

I was wondering if you guys have apprentices at all? Being part of a hair salon there are about 3 and all work really hard and are gaining great hands on experience. I was thinking as we grow and us two full timers are busy with clients a 3rd person to do walk in file and paints/ brow waxing/ tint testing would be great. I'm just held back by the fact I think I'm going to have to employ somebody which means lots of legal responsibility.

Please could you let me know your thoughts? Thanks!
:)

You can ask your local colleges if they have people who want unpaid work exp. That gets you off employing people. The only downside is that I dont think trainee therapists are insurable until they are qualified, unlike hair trainees. You would need employers liability ins for even unpaid work esp people. You would also need to check your contract. I have a clause in all of mine that self employed people are not allowed to employ their own staff in my salons.

Thank-you for that! I get on really well with my old college so I'll chat to see what they think...I just need somebody who can help out and be enthusiastic. I'll see what happens!
