hi guys

How much do you pay your Saturday staff and do you just pay them cash in hand or through the books?

my sat girl is 16 and she gets £3.50 an hour. I pay her cash, and make a note of it as "casual work £xxx"

but she's going through payslips as of this month as its no longer casual, she is now doing every saturday.

I gather this is a good wage for a saturday girl.

i got £15 a day, that was 9 years ago though. Just before i started full time training, I was on £25, but i was blowdrying in the salon. hths

ah cool thanks for that, a girl told me today a salon up road only give £20 a day and wasnt sure if there was a min wage for casual saturday staff or if there was a min age?

depends on your insurance, if you are insured to employ under 16s.

minimum wage applies to everyone over 16, unfortunately in my experience, hairdressing is well known for employers thinking they can ignore these rules.

I am yet to meet a full time trainee who is on the minimum wage or anything higher, which is £95 a week. Most in my area is £65 a week.

I think minimum wage for 16-18 is £.30ish, 18-22 is £4.85ish and 22 and over is around £5.80.

Not 100% sure on that but roughly correct.

HMRC will love "cash in hand" ;) AFAIK, casual and part time staff have the same rights as any other employee and you, as an employer, are responsible for their tax and NI etc

Hear hear.

Pay your staff what they are worth and do so lawfully. Part of the reason for the rampant decline in this industry is due to employers not paying the right wage or the right way.

Grrrrr.

i was advised by bus gateway if its just a one off job every now and again, then you can pay them cash and not have to put them on pay role etc.

i understand its diff for every saturday, which is why my sat girl is going on pay role this month but if its really irregular what should you do?

Hi Kim, Here's a quote from this, helpful, web site Payroll Tips - Casual Workers

"For PAYE purposes, a "casual" employee is someone who

  • does not produce a current P45, and

  • is engaged to work on a single occasion for a period of not more than one week (or two weeks in the case of harvest casuals engaged by farmers), and

  • is not expected to be employed again within the current tax year."
To me it sound like anything more than one occasion of employment (must mean one Saturday) in a tax year means they are not classed as "casual workers".

Personally I think it's best for you to call your PAYE office and ask for clarification or, play it safe, and put her on your payroll?

HTH

Hi ,sorry i had to bump this post up again , im about to start a 16hour girl on national minimum wage - i spoke to HMRC Myself and they informed me , if my part timer stays under the £97 threshold per week , you dont have to be registered as an employer and they dont go through the PAYE system ....as they wont be paying NIC OR TAX
The only thing you have to do is keep on record how much they get paid and there details etc , (obviously with same entitlements as a full time worker, i.e holidays , wages , sick pay , maternity etc)

It seems a bit to straight forward , does this sound about right ??

Think im going to definetly ring them again to double check .
