When I'm sculpting I often end up with a v-shaped 'nick' at the point where my form meets the free edge - right on the corners....... How can I make sure I don't get it??

I'm trying harder to tailor my forms so they butt right up, but I still get this indent and it's driving me mad :irked:! I need to iron this out before my Masters qualification - any ides for me?

p.s. I'm talking CND L+P......

oooo hun This does my head in too...
I always tend to get it on one side though (when doing my own)
I do think it is just down to the form and tayloring...
I find it happens more, the shorter the nail bed (obviously leaving the gap)

The only thing I do is sometimes look back and add a dry bead there when I have removed the form.
But obviously its best to NOT have to do this at all..

i was thinking the same thing about adding an extra bead of product.xx

vetty are you sculpting out the free edge in one bead or are you layering?
I still tend to do one thin layer (the thickness of a tip) and then carry on as if there was a tip there, I think it 'might' be a thickness issue ... your making them just a tad to thin on the side walls, remember you also have the thickness of the natural nail 'trapped' in between the product as apposed to placing the product on top of the tip, so when you file to finish your taking away more product from on top of the nail than you do with a t&o, making it to thin at the side walls (I always filed the ears of the smile away til I got my head round this)
do you know what I mean?

I do layer CD, and I think it's because I am so concerned with staying away from the skin that I don't push enough to the sides - does that make sense?? Also, I think I might be working too thin at times..... The nick is there before I file so it's not something I'm filing away, it's a gap in my inital application.....

Emms and Tracey, a dry bead to 'touch up' would work, but I do really want to get that shape first go with my brush iykwim?

arrh .. have you tried making 2 little 'nics' on the forms? hold your scissors straight at the form and cut a small line exactly where the natural nail side walls are, this will free up the form at the sides so you can work your brush better up the side walls, without the sculpt becoming to hippy and fat, see if this helps

i do the same as thing as you yvette.mine is my product application aswell.i find if im not tto careful i then put to much there and like cd (clare) said i end up filing away the ears of the white.
i dont quite understand what you mean clare have you got any pics? sorry for being dumb.:o.xx

your not dumb I've not explained it right !!

look at the form and the bit that goes under the free edge its a curve, right line it up as you would to check the fit, and at each side of the nat nails side walls make a small cut straight back into the form so when you fit the form the sides of the form kinda 'get out of the way' ... wish I had a pic ..

... wish I had a pic ..

I wish you had a pic too....my L&P skills are at an all time low....and demand for it an all time high for! Grrr!

Great question Vetty....lots of people can really learn from things like this!

I'm reading all these threads with interest, cos I don't have an Creative academy anywhere near me! And I need about a year of one to one to update my skills!

Anyway....keep the info coming ladies....its all fab! lol!

if ive read this thread right, it sounds like your having probs with fitting the form because the Natural Nail is too square, what i do with this is take the corners off the nat nail, and file them right down, that way , the form will fit properly, with alot less tailoring

Beat me to it, was just about to say the same thing, when you file that wee corner off the natural nail, generally the form will fit, unless you have quite a square free edge and then you will defo need to tailor the form to suit.

I get it - thank you, I'll give it a try......

Get it!

Thanks everyone for your input, there's some really useful info here. I thinkit's a combination of not tailoring the natural nail or the form quite enough and not checking if my application is consistent right down the sidewalls........ Plenty for me to work on!

Cheers guys xxxxx
