Question 1: Ring the inland revenue/log via website
Question 2: No you dont have to have a business account/but shows professionalism if you do
Question 3: Speak to an accountant or take advice from Inland Revenue. In the main you need to keep receipts for anything that you spend money on because of your business. The inland revenue run some courses on things like this and are invaluable.
Question 4: You dont have to have an accountant but if you are serious about your business and have a fair turnover then it is recommended as they can save you quite an amount on your tax bill.

Hope this helps but look at the IR web site for useful info: HM Revenue & Customs: Self Employed

Go on one of there free day courses in your area ,one for starting up and then another for keeping your accounts etc they will tell you everything you need to know and provide you with written info. They really are invaluable.
You have to register with inland revenue as self employed within 3 months of taking any money or your first advertising.
I work on my own and with car expenses i work on the 40p a mile thing.I am registered as a sole trader and do my accounts online as my business is small and simple i haven't needed an accountant.

Contact your local chamber of commerce. They run courses for people who run their own businesses, and they are likely to run one for people who want to know about starting their own business. That way you can get answers to these questions and any others you have about running your own business.

I am going on three course in the next few weeks. Basic Bookkeeping, Becoming Self Employed and What to claim for & VAT returns. Work are letting me have the days off work because i am being made redundant and i am trying to set up my own business. I cant wait really looking forward to it.

Contact your local business link as these are who i booked these courses with and better still THEY ARE FREE :)
