Hi geeks,

Im in a little dilemma with a decision to make and i was wondering if anyone can give me their opinions/advice.

I am considering a hairdressing course at my local hairdressing academy its a 2 year course and i would be going to the academy 1 day a week for 7 hours. And 4 days a week working in a salon as an apprenticeship which would be around 4 hours a day.

Now im sitting there thinking whether i should or not, this is something i would absolutely love to do! But where i already have my nail and beauty business established and im thinking how would i have the time to take on my appointments and fit it around my clients.
What if someone rings me whilst im there and wants an appointment booked how am i meant to take my beauty appointments obviously cant be on my phone all the time.

I dont want to let my beauty business fall to the waistline if you know what i mean.

So whats your advice or opinions?

So you think i should keep putting 24/7 into my beauty business and carry on studying and practicing with the current skills i have?

I.e establish my business more

Are you very busy now then? thats good. I would say stick to what you are already doing as it is an established business and is already bringing in loads of clients and money.

Unfortunately this is a call only you can make as dependent on so many factors...time and finances you have put in thus far..how close you see you are to making a success of your business etc etc.

Sometimes things do look greener on the other side of the fence and sometimes its best to make a change..you really have to figure out the pro's and cons of each option.
Maybe get a blank sheet of paper and write down the pro's and cons of 3 scenarios
1) remain at what your doing
2) dropping what your doing and pursuing another route
3) what about doing both..can this be done

write down all the positives on one side and all the negatives on the other.
Include things like investment in time and money thus far, finances, joy in what you do,hrs spent doing what you do,disruption to family life etc etc

The answer will become clear only if you are completely honest with putting down all your points on each scenario.

So time out..sit back and look at the whole bag before jumping in at the deep end

Yeah i have become really busy ive got appointments every day and ive doubled my profits from last month. Allot of my clients like their appointments during the day whilst kids are at school

Pro's
  • I can be there for my business and clients 24/7
  • I have enough time to get eveything in order and have time to practice with the nails especially.
  • I dont lose clients as im always there to answer their calls and take bookings when they need them.
Cons
  • There are some days (Rare) that i have no appointments so im doing nothing
2) dropping what your doing and pursuing another route

Pro's
  • None i would never drop my beauty business lol

3) what about doing both..can this be done
Pros

  • I will be able to do hairdressing

Cons
  • It would be allot of hard work doing both it may ware me out
  • I wont be able to attend to bookings made during the day and clients who like their appointments during the day wont be able to have them

Only you can answer that hun but i think that if you started a hairdressing course you would be taking on too much, like you have said you business is getting busy and your name is out there so tell me in your heart of heart do you see yourself being able to juggle your beauty and nails aswell as college one day a week and working in a salon? xx:hug:

As I recall you were bemoaning the fact that you didn't have enough clients, and that you've been qualified only a few weeks. I think you should consolidate what you've learned, learn to run a successful business, build up a loyal client base and become highly proficient in what you offer currently before embarking on another profession.

Yeah im busy with tanning not so much the nails - still trying to get nail clients

Is hair something that you are truly passionate about doing? If it is then go for it and muddle along with your tanning clients etc fitting them in as you can.
If hair is just something that you fancy trying rather than putting the hard graft and hours into your existing trade then i would advise you to think carefully as hairdressing is a completely different skill set and not an easy option.
Will be interested to hear your decision x

And having done so your conclusion is ????

To not do the hairdressing. Really i should have done it before i done anything else, but its hard to do it when your already established as its a very long course.

Thanks for your contribution and everyone elses help in helping me decide

Yey well done..it really is a descision that only you can make as you will live with that descision.

Calla nailed it on the head(tried to give you a rep point Carla but need to spread some more:Love:) ...consolidate your efforts into your existing business and grow it

Yep i love calla's business mind its great

I will continue to grow my current business with my current skills to be honest im going to take a step back and not learn anything more this year apart from skill building courses with CND

Thank you for the compliments!
I had many years in corporate land before retraining and learnt a lot. The last thing your clients need to think of you as is as a jack of all trades, master of none.
Become the very best nail tech/waxer/facialist and you won't need to diversify.

Why not stick at growing your business for another couple of years or so, to the point you can employ some staff.

Then you'll be able to take more of a back seat from seeing clients & if you still hanker after doing hairdressing you could apply for the course then.

You're still a mere spring chicken so why the rush to do everything yesterday? You need to take time out to smell the roses once in a while lol

Keep at it sweetie. You say you're really looking foreward to your waxing course and that you're really passionate about beauty so put your all into it and you'll see the benefits.
