Hi Guys ,

I am after some advice as am using shellac and finding its not lasting the full 2 weeks on clients nails and in some cases only a few days and starting to chip off, id say the average is 5 days before the clients say it starts to look bad.
I am really quite upset and annoyed as Im doing everything ( i think) im supposed too, this is my procedure:

  • File nails
  • use cuticle cream and Push back cuticles and trim
  • Buff nails to remove any shine and to smooth
  • Get clients to wash hands
  • apply a ph balancer to de hydrate the nail
  • shellac base coat 1 min sealing the free edge
  • first coat colour 2 nails at a time sealing the free edge and to avoid gel moving on the nails then cure for 1 min
  • do all nails 2 at a time curing in between sealing free edge
  • then cure all nails for a total of 2 min
  • repeat with secound coat
  • cure 2 min
  • top coat 2 at a time
  • cure for a final 2 min
  • cuticle oil lightly round the cuticle and then hand cream but not on the nails
can anyone help? anyone else having the same problem with this? then another lady I know is using the cheap bluesky shellac and says its lasting the full 2 weeks perfectly which is very fustrating

would it be my lamp? im only using a cheap uv lamp but has 4 x 9 watt bulbs....

help?

Hi I'm afraid that it is your lamp, you need to use either the cnd brisa lamp or the new cnd five finger lamp it's been specifically designed for shellac, you need to do your cuticle work etc then scrub with scrubfresh apply your basecoat, cure for only ten seconds, then apply each coat curing for two mins followed by your topcoat for two mins then wipe tacky layer with disperse or equivalent, the lamp is definitely causing you problems :(

And you definitely don't need to buff the nails to remove the shine that's the beauty of shellac ( amongst many other things)

It is your lamp.

Infact, most of what your doing is not correct. I would recommend getting the correct lamp and attending a training class. Then you will be able to Shellac correctly and confidently.

I would have to say your lamp is one factor. What kind of cuticle remover are you using? Is it CND Cuticle Away? I wouldn't use any other cuticle remover as this remover is designed to work with the Shellac system. Second, instead of having the client wash her hands which could cause the nails to swell with water, just remove the cuticle away with Cool Blue and a small amount of water. You DO NOT need to buff or remove the shine from the nails. Once you completely remove the cuticle adhered to the nail bed remove the Cuticle Away with Cool Blue and water mixed in a spray bottle. Us a lint free plegit with Scrub Fresh and really scrub the nail bed and free edge. Scrub Fresh with remove and oils, dirt and contaminants from the nail bed. After Scrub Fresh, continue with the rest of Shellac application

chocolatepickle is right, you really need a class.

Can I ask where you purchased your Shellac?

You shouldn't buff the nails to remove shine part of the appeal of shellac is that no buffing is required. When they call it a power polish they mean it. It's like the nail polish superman ;)

Oh my goodness, your process is nothing like the Shellac process at all. It seems more suited to some kind of gel application.

And as has already been said your lamp is incorrect.

How long have you been using Shellac?

i definitely think you need some training and the lamp hun, im only just starting with shellac but i see lots of reasons why you are having problems separate to the lamp xx hth

I didn't even read the rest of the process after buffing the nail * bad Jodie for reading and running- slaps self on hand* I agree with the others the whole process isn't right ( no offence) investing in some good training is the way to go :) good luck! :)

I would say your lamp is a factor but only one of the factors here.

I would advise a class then you can be confident in your service.

And also what are you trimming???

Hi hun,

This is completely the wrong procedure and wrong products i'm afraid. You will definitely need the CND lamp to cure your shellac properly, it is the only lamp that has specifically been designed to work with Shellac, anything else just wont do.

You need to use cuticle away not a cuticle cream as cream will have oil in it which will make shellac lift from the nail. You need to remove cuticle away with water in a spray bottle and wipe off the nail with a towel. Do not get your client to wash her hands as too much water will cause nails to swell.

Once you've done your cuticle work and filed the nails you'll need to thoroughly scrub the nail plate with scrub fresh to remove any residues and dehydrate the nail.

Do not buff the nail! It is not necessary with Shellac and is one of the many reasons Shellac is different to gel polishes. Shellac is not gel!

You do not need to do 2 nails at a time as Shellac doesn't shrink like gel.

Apply thin coat of base coat to all fingers and thumb and cure for 10seconds

Apply thin layer of colour to all fingers and thumb and cure for 2 mins

Apply 2nd thin layer of colour to all fingers and thumb and cure for 2 mins

Apply thin layer of top coat to all fingers and thumb and cure for 2 mins

Then use disperse to remove the tacky layer from the nails and rub in solar oil.

Your lamp is definitely a problem but so is your procedure i'm afraid.

I know its hard starting out and products are expensive but trust me, invest in the proper CND materials and your clients Shellac will definitely last the full 2 weeks and longer.

You wont regret spending the money because you'll soon be making the money and more!

Good luck x

WOW......

thankyou all sooooo much,

ok so I need to re look at everything..

I buy my shellac from Sweet squared wholesalers but yes I havent dont the offical training which I will now look into.

I did the opi gel training and everything set me back £1000 so thought id use a simlar procedure after watching the cnd video.

I am a good therapist and been qualified for 17 years but just shows you there is always something new to learn.

It's not lasting because:
Incorrect lamp
Incorrect nail prep
Incorrect application of Shellac
Incorrect curing times
There are loads of posts/threads on here do a search and learn the correct way, better still if you afford it get yourself trained in Shellac!

n.

Can I ask out of interest why you are changing from the opi gel to shellac?

Always worth training with whatever youre using I find, still concerned about the trimming though?!

I changed from opi axxium soak off gel because again it wasnt lasting, and I was using the OPI lamp for this too.

Im trimming the cuticles with the cuticle nippers...

Im always very wary when people say they are trimming the "cuticles"
Especially when its part of your routine as its not needed for everyone.
I only ever use nippers to remove hangnails and never cuticle, I use cuticle remover for the cuticles and solar oil to shrink back and overgrown eponychium.

Im sure this is what youre doing I just had to check! :)

Did you read Geeg's Shellac Tutorial?

http://www.salongeek.com/nail-finis...-colour-coat-system-application-tutorial.html

Your application process is quite different so it could be any number of things.

This tutorial will help you out in the meantime.

Shellac is completely different to using a gel, so the step by steps will be completely different to what you are used to.

You should also have a read of this :Look_righ http://www.salongeek.com/nail-geek/172609-uv-product-summary.html

It will explain why it is so important to use the correct lamp for your system.

HTHs

thankyou so much for that. Im on it...my shellac will be the best around :) xxx
