Hi
I'm not sure what to and need some help if you would be so kind.
I will finish my nvq level 2 beauty therapy course on Thursday, and have been accepted on level 3 in September the thing is I don't know weather to go on the course because although I loved it and I am so proud of myself for getting to the end ( I'm 31 with 3 boys) it's been hard plus I have found that I will have to go on other courses to be the best I can, ie hot wax with Kim hopefully, cnd 5 day for L&p ect, so my question is will I really need level 3 as I want to work for myself, and I really not bothered to do massage or should I as it will benefit me. Thank you for your reply's

The thing is with this industry, you get out of it what you put in. Only you can really answer your question.
Massage is an invaluble skill to have and one that can be built on, if not straight away but in the future.

If you don't have the time to do a full time NVQ3 course, its not the end of the world, you can always add to your skills when you have the time. There is alot more written work in NVQ3, lots of case studies and things.

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck with your career in the Beauty & Nails world!

I am a mature student and I have done and will continue to do practical training but I am doing levels 1,2 & 3 via distance learning. I'm doing the studying because I think it is so important to know the theory side of the beauty business.

I would say do it, you will probably have more opportunities open to you. If you want to start your own business then your clinets will know you have trained to a high level and if you want to work in a salon you again can show that you have worked to a high standard. Good luck what ever you decide hun x

Thank-you both for your reply's, I don't mind the hard work I just don't want to spend another year learning (sometimes) sub standard work like I know they are going to teach us L&p and I bet it's going to be shocking compared to the training from cnd. When we were shown hot wax we had a 5 min demo from out tutor followed by her telling us not to bother with hot wax as no wants or uses it any more! So should I do lots of courses in just what I want to do or do that and nvq 3 I think this is the only option as really want my level 3, its going to cost a fortune but I just want to be the best I can.
Thanks again for your time and advice Xx

Have you considered doing it via distance learning? The support is great and I'm sure would be cheaper than going to college, also you fit it around your own life, kids, family.

Hi I agree that theory is very important with training to be a professional beauty therapist. Many people think that beauty is all practical and i've even had clients asking if I taught myself. I found my nvq3 and HND vitally important as I learned things such as diet and nutrition, business law, customer care, managment, marketing, advanced a+p, chemistry of products etc. which you do not learn in your nvq2.

Since you are a mature student you obviously have your own skills from past experience which may mean you do not need that type of theory. Sometimes people don't know the extent of skills needed in this industry and may struggle with running a business or lack knowledge of treatments although they are good practically.

I find NVQ2 treatments are my bread and butter as well as massage, so I would definately recommend a massage course at the least and to continue with your own research via the internet, books etc. if you do not have the time to do your NVQ3.

hope this helps x x

I would say do it,the beauty industry is flooded with beauty therapists,it's a very competetive market out there so the more treatments you can offer the more clientelle you will get.
If for example you wanted to offer non surgical facials eventually you would have to have done your level 3 to be able to go on to offer this treatment and be insured.
Massage has so many benefits and is a hugely sought after treatment.
It is a hard slog, there's no denying it but the satisfaction of gaining this qualification is huge and you will certainly be more open to job offers as a lot of salons require a level 3 qualified therapist.HTH
