Stupid question but does 12/11 and such actually lift treated hair or just rather tone it down resulting in a lighter appearance?

Otherwise gentle toning would have given you similar results plus less damage...

Looks still fab!

It lifted for me, I couldn't tone it first as it wasn't light enough all over. That's why I did the highlift to lift it another few shades.
Gonna try a toner this time after I've done my roots as I think it's light enough now to get a decent result from a toner.

Colours like highlifts can sometimes lift out old colour by over-oxidising it, and the will also continue to lighten the natural underlying pigments making it look lighter.
