Does anyone ever have any problems with skin irritation from the filing dust from acrylic?

I am careful to wash my hands after doing a set of nails and i'm sure its not an allergy to the monomer, i'm very careful not to touch the skin when i do my nails and wash my hands carefully after application.

But, i have noticed a pimply rash on the back of my right hand (i'm left handed, so my right hand is used to hold the clients hand when filing and is more likely to get dust on it).

I dont think the back of my hand would ever come into contact with the l&p but it may get filing dust on it and it could be that when i wash my hands, i'm concentrating more on washing my fingers and palms than the back of my hand?!

Any opinions?

Thanks

Yes I get this problem too, but once I get the rash it stays for some time.
I went to the docs and got some cream and that normally helps with the itching.

Thanks for the reply. I've been getting nervous that i'm allergic to the monomer somehow, even though i've always been very careful.

I've only recently started working on the general public and did 4 sets last week, so my hands would have been in contact with the dust more than before.

Hopefully it will clear up if i'm even more meticulous with my hand scrubbing!!

They teach us to ware gloves, masks and safety glasses in school so we don't come in contact with it it or breath in the dust, or get a bit in the eye. Might be time for you to do this if you think it is a reaction to the products. I can just imagine what breathing it in might do to you. It is my biggest fear to become allergic to something I love to do!
Good luck!

I know its fine to do nails without wearing gloves (use clear blue ofc) but maybe you do need to try wearing them. It may help, just remember to change them between clients ofc. I get the same prob as you and it can get really sore, I find a good caring hand cream helps too.

Do you wipe your brush on a tissue or pad? You may be touching this. Monomer is far more likely than dust to cause sensitivity (unless you are using a low odour or uv cured l&p or gel).

I have a very fetching dust rash on my chest , I know it's dust as it has happened a few times before and I saw the dust patch there when I had finished a set of gels on Thursday, I washed it off but the rash still came ! I use a 0.5 hydrocortisone cream on it given to me by the doc.

I have very sensitive and dry skin that flares up at the smallest thing!

I used to get this if I got very busy, washing hands is all good and dandy but does nothing for all the file dust that drifts onto the sleeve of your tunic/jumper etc. It's just as important to give your clothes a good brush down between clients as it is your work station and your hands, and the constant washing and sanitising can actually make it worse for your skin. Clients wash once, sanitise once, if you have 7 or 8 clients in a day, well, it's not hard to work it out, so it's very important to use a good hand cream on your own hands.

I dont wipe my brush on a towel. I use geeg's trick of a lint free pad with sanitiser on it. I know its less likely to be the dust but i have always been careful. I have the rash on my other wrist today but havent done any nails. It may be unrelated, i'm really not sure. If it is a sensitivity to monomer, what are my options? Would i need to avoid using l&p altogether and try gel?
Thanks for replies everyone x

Just a thought, it could be an irritation from the dust on your terry table towel, when filing I place a napkin over the towel, when finished I dispose of this leaving a clean towel for me to rest upon during application. I also replace with a clean terry towel between clients/ :)

Thank you  I'll just hope its the dust and not the monomer!!! Maybe i'm best just to carry on as normal for my next couple of sets and keep an eye out for anything that i might be doing or not doing to cause it!! I'm almost tempted to try and video myself doing my own nails but i obviously sit differently doing my own tha i do a clients.

I always start itching if I come into contact with the powder, I have the NFU oH diamond and although gorgeus for some reason I always get a bit of the powder on me when I take the lids off

oooohhh.... hadnt thought about the powder on its own! Will have a little check that i havent been getting that on me. I use NFU.oh but i dont have the diamond pots  just the normal ones. xx

I also have a tendency to get a rash from the dust which early on in my career it was quite nasty, I have dry skin anyway. I was prescribed 1% hydrocortisone which helped clear it up pretty fast but I have to make sure I not only wash my hands after a client but also dust all my tunic down & of course change the towel with each client and loads of hand cream after each client. I do however find I react much worse to the dust when using Nfu.Oh especially when filling my own nails I stop a couple of times during filling and wash my hands. I keep my wipe pad at a point where it is in no way going to get on my skin and use Gigi`s tip also.
