I've been receiving ever more messages with advice on which books to read so as to improve knowledge on skin, treatments and products, so I thought now might be a good time to post a list of what I consider to be essential reading.

You cannot hope to be an effective, efficient and professional facialist unless you genuinely understand the anatomy and physiology of the skin, the ingredients of the products applied and how they interact with the various structures within the skin itself.

I'm a registered general nurse by profession and I have a post graduate qualification in operating theatre nursing too, so my A & P knowledge was pretty good before I became a beauty therapist. That said a lot of it was and is irrelevant, but it certainly piqued my interest in the inner workings of the body!

Firstly - get yourself a decent A & P book.

Helen McGuinness's book gets good reviews!

Anatomy & Physiology: Therapy Basics Fourth Edition: Amazon.co.uk: Helen McGuinness: Books

Next, you know all those "wonder" ingredients that hit the Daily Fail website regularly? Here's where you can find out what they actually do.

Most of us want to know a bit more than just the cleanse, tone moisturise routine so Mark Lees's book goes into a bit more depth.

Skincare Beyond the Basics: Amazon.co.uk: Mark Lees: Books

There is a book all about skin analysis - it doesn't tell you what to do with the information once you've got it, and it is full of spelling and grammatical errors, but it's useful nonetheless. It's available only as an ebook now.

Advanced Skin Analysis Book

All of us are ageing; there's nothing we can do about that, but we can certainly understand what happens to the skin when it ages and how the signs of it can be minimised.

This is an awesome book!

Aging Skin (Milady's Aesthetician Series): Amazon.co.uk: Constanze Schmaling: Books

Sometimes clients can understand things much better in pictorial form so I have this little nugget in the salon.

Finally, if you're going to do any kind of electrical work, like galvanic, micro current then this is the book for you:

Body Therapy and Facial Work: Electrical Treatments for Beauty Therapists, 4th Edition: Amazon.co.uk: Mo Rosser, Greta Couldridge, Sue Rosser: Books

Yes, they're expensive, but they're vital tools of your trade. Ask for Amazon vouchers for Christmas and birthday - I did!

Enjoy - any questions just shout!
