Small Rebalance Problem

I have a small prob with my rebalances. Im noticing when im taking down the thickness and shortening the free edge, my square free edge seems to turn to an off square oval shape. Then when re applying my gel the enhancement appears shorter looking (even though ive only slightly reduced the length), and thick! Its not happening all the time, but when i do do this, i cant go back and change what ive already done! The way im filing im ruining the shape of the enhancement.

Im taking down the free edge first. If i was to thin the product first then take down the free edge after, would this just sort out my prob? x

I always thin my product before reducing the length, it makes it much easier to file the free edge.
