Help, I've just recently bought in a soak off gel brand and i practised on my sister with them and the very next day she told me one had just peeled right off! Why has this happened? I know it's something to do with my preparation but what can i be doing different?

Which brand did you buy?

In my experience a major key in getting gels to adhere is the prep. Make sure cuticles are pushed back, shine is buffed off nails, dust WIPED off (not just brushed off....found that out the hard way) with either their cleanser or 99% alcohol. Since you said you just bought a system, did that include the lamp and are the bulbs new? HTH

Are you making sure to cap each and every layer of gel applied?

make sure you allow the cleanser to dry thoroughly and really work in rhe base layer of gel too.

im using akzentz and the UV lamp i have is the creative one which i haven;t had very long at all. I've got scrub fresh would that do instead of a cleanser?

I have used Akzentz soak off and if the prep is done right they dont just peel off unless they have had a "little help" by the client.

What are your prep stages?

I'm no expert, but I think it might be the lamp. I think the brisa lamp has a different UV output to other UV lamps so the gel might not have cured properly.

There's no problem using a Brisa lamp to cure Akzentz. It cures fine as long as you are in for the full 2 minutes and as long as your bulbs are ok.

Did you use Surebond on the natural nail, followed by a layer of Optibond around the edges of the nail? (It can go all over but takes long to soak off, and I've found around the edge to be fine) Then use a base and gloss before building up your colour and finishing (& capping) with Base & Gloss.

Akzentz Options....especially the darker colour also does shrink a bit more than some other soak of gels, which isn't a problem as long as you make sure you cap each nail and flash cure it. For the really dark colours try cleansing your Base n Gloss after curing before colour application to minimise on shrinkage.

If you followed all these steps and its still peeled off then its your prep. Akzentz...well any soak off gel tbh, really doesn't like any oil or grease on the nail plate. you need to prep, cleanse and dehydrate the surface of the nail very well.

Also I find Akzentz works best with a clear margin of about 0.5mm away from the cuticle and sidewalls, as if it does touch those areas you will get lifting albeit that will be a few days down the line.

Hi Lyndsay,

I've just recently had this problem too, what do you mean by capping and flash cureing? Its not usually a prob so like you say my client probably helped it on its way but its her first time so I'll let her off this time I know how tempting it is when there's a gap!

Hi Lyndsay,

what do you mean by capping and flash cureing?

The gel needs to come righ over the free edge and form a good seal, so you bring your gel brush down along the nail and then either swing it through 90 degrees to bring the gel over the edge, or pick up the tiniest amount more gel and touch it to the end of the nail FE to create the cap. Then, as gel shrinks back more the longer it is left until it is cured, 'flash' cure it, by putting under the lamp for 10 seconds only, to lock it in place. Don't forget to finish the cure at the end of the end....2 minutes is needed to make sure it's fully cured.

scrub fresh is perfectly fine to prepare the nailplate with. If you go to the cnd website and have a look at the brisa gel video they show you how to cap the nail.
