Hi Geeks,
I feel I have to post somewhere re social media, I may even get a blog just to vent every once in a while....
Am I the only one in the world who dislikes what social media has done to the world we live in? Let me tell you what I mean...
A few days ago there was a death in my family. I actually found out via Facebook before anything else. I saw a picture of the person who passed with 'RIP' etc written as the caption. This then led me to text my father and ask him if this person was dead (his side of the family) He actually didn't get back to me as 10 minutes after me texting he received a phone call from one of my cousins telling him the bad news. He then headed home and once he got there he called me back to confirm it was true. How awful that this news was found out over
Facebook?
This then leads me onto another problem... The way people constantly update what they are doing. For example my mother in law. She will write statuses about how she's drinking a cider, or she's just watched a programme that's made her cry. She's around 50 years old and in my eyes I find this behaviour embarrassing. I could also tell you what my sister in law is doing almost every hour and where is she and what she has planned?! To me this is too much information. I know Facebook asks you what's on your mind but I'm sure if a stranger walked past & asked you you would run a mile. So why do people find this ok to do?
I also hate how viral videos are, on my news feed I will see at least one abusive video a day. The most recent been a woman throwing her baby around. (his bones obviously broken) I found this video extremely disturbing and it made me extremely angry. I know some people will say don't watch the video then but I must admit I am a very very curious person, the video doesn't usually explain how graphic the content is. While people are watching this video has anyone ever thought that it may be giving people ideas? A mother (if you can even call them that) may watch that video and think 'haha that looks fun, I may try it with my child' I completely disagree with these videos been made viewable to the public but even the Daily Mail are guilty of doing this.
My last problem is how attached people have become to their phones. So much so that the Daily Mail released statistics which stated that about 90% of people no longer look up when been out in public, they are all looking downwards at their phones and not taking in their surroundings (this could be very dangerous) I also have many friends who will do this. They will get in my car and we will head out, my friend was once directing me to somewhere and because she was so wrapped up in her phone we missed the turn off on a roundabout, just after the turn off she decided to shout out 'oh it was that turning' which was very off putting. I will be out for dinner with a friend and she won't stop looking at her phone & won't even hear what I'm talking about. I find this behaviour very rude and I don't condone it. I make a point of not looking at my phone when been with friends and I sometimes won't even answer a phone call out of respect.
This has been a major rant but what happened to been out and about and taking in your surroundings? Actually appreciating the world rather then missing it. What happened to phoning your friend or family member to see how they are or even popping round to their house? Actually taking in what they are saying in a conversation?
Everything has become so social mediafied and I find it a real shame.
If you are guilty of the above please think about how your post of Facebook may make others feel before posting, how much scenery you missed while been out today or instead of messaging that person to see how they are, ring them.
Too much information is never a good thing. People will know so much about you that they won't need to ask you how you are because they already know from your previous Facebook status.
It's a real shame and things will only get worse x
