Hi,

I'm hoping you can help me... I did a ladies nails on saturday and she just had a nno l+p because she has quite long nails but her index finger on one hand the nail had split right at the side of the free edge (where the nail bed meets the free edge infact if she would have tried to pull it off it would have gone into the nail bed) but she wanted to try and save it until it had grown out more so that it wouldn't be painful to pull off so i put acrylic on it hoping to save it. She has just text me to say that nail has started to lift, would this be because the nail is split? There isn't any other nails that are lifting so im assuming it will be. If this is the reason, why would it cause the l+p to lift as when i do silk on my nails to save them i never get any lifting?

I have done many a L&P NNO on nails like these and have never had lifting. Get her to come in so you can check where the lifting is happening.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't think it should have caused lifting but maybe i didn't prep it properly because i was scared about hurting her by catching the split nail! Not too sure but i am going to have a look at it on tuesday and see what's happened! She hasn't said where it is lifting.

Thanks again.

Hi there. I would say that you probably didn't prep it properly. This is a problem really with broken nails such as these, we are scared of hurting the client so we don't do a proper job.

It is a judgement call really, if you can prep properly and there is no visible open wound on the nail bed then I would repair as you did but would be reluctant if I couldn't do the prep I would worry about lifting and possibly discolouration of the nail as water may be able to seep in from underneath. If there was any sign of an open sore area on the nail bed I would not apply anything over it at all, just advise the client to return once healed.

We all have to learn and the best way is by experience, we remember these lessons the most! This is now one lesson less you must learn on your way to being the best you can be.

Hope this helps!

Love

Sheila

I would have repaired the natural nail with silk or fiberglass ... does a much better job than L&P.

If I was using L&P I would for sure secure the break first with Fiberglass or silk and then do the NNO with L&P.
