The hairdresser i work with caught her nail while working on a client today and she has ripped a small chunk of her natural nail edge half way up exposing her nail bed, well i think its her nail bed underneath, it is very pink in colour but no bleeding but they could be a very thin layer of plate left covering her nail bed has its not moist looking im not too sure. She can lift the nail chunk which she split up and look underneath. Cringe!

I didn't know what to do with it so thought i would ask here. She did want me to do a sculpt on her this afternoon. Is it safe to still go ahead with a scuplt?
It has been annoying her and she wanted to pick the loose bit off. I just advised to keep it has it is and cover with a plaster so not to catch it until i knew what to do for sure. It is her day off tomorrow so i won't beable to do anything with it until thursday, if she has picked it off before then can i still go head with overlaying it?

Hiya, I think I'm right in posting this but I'm sure there will be someone else coming along soon :)

In the early stages she should put a simple sterile dressing on eg.
a plaster, to protect the raw nail bed from potential infection and
being banged against objects which would hurt like h*ll. Then
start to remove the dressing at night so the nail be can start to dry
out as the nail grows back. You will get to a point when you can
leave the dressing off permanently.

You should not put anything on it, like cream/ointment.
You mainly want to protect against infection and painful bumps
and knocks.

If it is dry, then it should be ok to put a short sculpt over the top but it will probably hurt like h*ll for a moment when you sanitise it!!

HTH's

Sarah. xx

As long as the skin isn't broken, bleeding, or seeping (ick!) or any other signs of infection, I would put a tip over the broken area, cut it short and blend it, and overlay it (including appropriate prep). You want to reduce exposure to monomer, hence the tip instead of sculpting directly on the nail bed. HTH. :)

Thankyou for your help :)

YEOWCH! That looks so painful! You actually scrubfreshed the area first? Did you take a Vicodan beforehand? :green:

I done the very same thing a few months ago and OMG it was agony. I did have pics but think I have deleted them. I still have them on my pc though.

The best thing to do is, thoroughly cleanse and scrubfresh her nail and either gelbond if you can or sculpt out a wee bit on her nail, it will stop the pain immediately. She needs for the nail to be protected.

I sculpted mine out a wee bit, not excessive length and it is back to normal.

hth :)

Just off to find pics

I had a gel colour on so it was awful to file the excess colour off so I basically done the best I could and it all is ok now, wasn't a great job by all accounts but all I could bear!

I realise you did this a few months ago fi, but snap, I did that to 2 fingers (ring finger and little finger) on Tuesday night. Cleaned the blood up, left them as they were for that night, and redid them the next day. That'll teach me for trying to catch something as it was falling and jamming them into my leg:eek:

Thankyou for taking the time to post pics fi :) You did a good job there!
I have seen her today and she has trimmed her nail really short and it does't look too bad now it has had a chance to dry out so i will do a tip and blend when she is next free xx

you can seal the area with some nail adhesive. the adhesive we use is actually a medical grade product and is akin to what is used in hospitals to mend wounds. allow the adhesive to dry and then work as normal on top of it.
i would keep it short so that there is less chance of catching it and causing further trauma.
