I soon will be setting up to go mobile and have been looking at the prices of spray tanning kits.. Havent got a huge budget after i have bought all the essentials eg. skincare, make up, waxing etc and had the idea of at first not offering spray tanning, just exfoliating (if client wanted me to do so) moisturising and application using st tropez. Maybe then when i get going and the money rolls in could save up for a decent gun and cubicle. Why do u all think? How much do you think to charge for a full 3 step application? Also is spray tanning a popular treatment? In my area i would charge 20.00 for spray tan, it doesnt seem a great amount, not convinced i would get the return quickly to pay for the outlay. However i would not up my price. Any suggestions welcome!

I would think Spray tan is much better, only because normal tan applications are availble and easy to use plus they are so cheap now days. I think Spray Tan is the best way, You can pick a tent and gun up for about £300 approx there are lots of great deals out there. Plus spray tan is so much quicker than manual.

I charge £20 you can always charge say extra £5.00 for a double spray. It will take a few sprays before it pays for itself but your be pleased you done it.

I offer spray tans and they are so popular summer and winter.

I offer hand applied tans and although you can buy them it is no substitute for professionally applied tan - in the same way people can slap oils on at home, put on their own false nails etc, it's never the same as a proper service. In fact you can also buy home spray tan kits from Argos.

Just to balance the thread out by putting some of the positive aspects of hand applied cream - it tends to last a lot longer, it's more akin to a treatment in that people get a full body scrub & the massaging in of the product, and it's easy to control & custom blend the tan.

I used to offer manual tans, but I must say that, I so much prefer sparay tans.

and it's easy to control & custom blend the tan.

on certain aspects, i would agree with ya flower, but you can still control the "blend" of the tan with a spray too - just my opinion tho and no offence meant

Where do they sell the gun and tents for that price? Sounds more affordable than what ive been looking at lol!

i used to offer both , but everyone always had spray tans so now thats all i offer :green:

After doing both I definitely prefer spray tanning from a business point of view it takes much less time and with no real great loss in profit and it takes less product. I used to dread doing St Tropez manual tanning as it would take an hour and a half including the body scrub and got me all hot and sweaty, I charged £40 now I do Vanity Spray tanning at £30 a tan, it takes max 20mins (including set up and advising the client and having a little chat, as I'm mobile ), in a salon it would take 10 mins. Also the client is immediately dry and looks good with spray tanning so could carry on with their day whereas with most manual systems you need longer to dry and can look muddy even with buffing.

I can do a St Tropez in an hour tops (for £40), and to be honest I quite like the challenge of getting it done in time, whilst my clients enjoy getting a tan & the sensation of having a 'treatment'. There are places near me that just do spray tanning, and I tend to pick up the clients who don't like having spray tans for whatever reason, from longevity to having to stand there undressed having tan sprayed at them.

Maybe it's because I had to mitt off the body scrub rather than the client showering it off! I still think you're speedy! I thought it lasted longer having a manual tan until I started doing them and I actually think Vanity spray lasts the same as St Tropez manual and is a better colour. I suppose it's always possible to do sprays and manual depending on client choice. I would be glad to give my manual tans away thought! Hee hee.

Hi martin, you seem a pro in manual tanning! What would you suggest as a price for a full body exfoliate and tan as a mobile therapist, 35.00? 40.00? Would you need to shower off the exfoliant?

It's only because I do a lot of them that I got it down to an hour! I use sponges & mitts to remove the exfoliant. My clients find it lasts them 7 to 10 days, depending on how often the wash, swim etc. It's up to you how much you charge based on your general hourly rate & competition, but £35 to £40 sounds about right.

I've only ever done spray tanning tbh...the client exfoliates at least 24 hours before and is a real money maker if you can market yourself properly and use quality products.
Obviously having a really good machine does help x

This is the cheapest I've seen:-

Spray Tanning Equipment

You will find Suntana on here (user name "Suntana" believe it or not), I'm sure they will be able to advise you.

Just to say, I don't have this machine but it is the cheapest package I've seen. Also, if you don't get along with their products for whatever reason you can try others once you have your machine. However, Sienna X now do a great tent with a large clear section at the top, great for letting in natural light so that you can see what you're doing.

Thanks for that suntana link, looks really good, very reasonable prices! Do you reckon the gun is any good though? :s

Hi there, Sienna X do a start up kit for £195, that includes a machine, one of the new skylighted cubicles and 1 ltr of solution. Its a really good kit to introduce you to spray tanning, then you can always upgrade your machine when you have built up your client base and started earning a few pennies.

We also have the fab new Maxi mist available either on it's own for £175 (including a free litre of Sienna X solution) or it is available in 2 different kits.

Also just 2 let all of you know, Sienna X won't be exhibiting at Excel next month

Hope that helps, if you need any more info you can PM me.
