Hi...

I about to set up my own mobile/ home spray tan business and will be working at evenings and weekends.

I am new to all this and need some advise if possible...

Firstly...how do i go about creating my own website?

Secondly...do I need to declare my evening and weekend spray tanning as self employed before creating a website?

Many Thanks

Terri

Hi there, Ruth Mills is the person you want to speak to. She is very helpful and will show you all you need to know. Her website is salonalchemy.co.uk

I do have her number if you get stuck.
on the declaring point I would check with you local tax office as an enquirer.

I think you have 3mths from starting your business to register it.

Yeah Ruths websites are lovely and very well laid out, there are also a few free sites you can use. These are template ones so there will be lot's of other the same, But if it is just to get your info out there then they aren't bad. I have one with weebly at the moment, but once I can afford it I will probably get Ruth to do one.

I think that's right, Jenx; I would certainly register with HMRC as being self-employed before setting up a website advertising my business though, just to be on the safe side. They'll also be able to advise you of what records you need to keep etc as well, and you'll probably want to set aside an amount each month towards your tax bill too... perhaps take a look at the business link website, Business support, information and advice | Business Link as that contains lots of resources for people starting their own businesses or working self-employed - hope that helps :)

Hi Terri,

There is some really great advise here. While you are in the process of setting up your business there is still things you can be doing in the background to keep the process moving. That way when your business affairs are in order you won't have to wait for everything else to get caught up. This is a great time to be perfected your trade. As far as the website, it is unclear whether you are building this or you are having someone else. If you are looking for a great spray tanning website you should look at the websites that EnvyTan can make for you.

Building a website is not easy, nor is it fun, especially if you do not know what you are doing. Having a website created by someone with that expertise can bebeneficial in so many ways. If the search engines can't find you then the only people seeing your website are the ones you tell that it's there. Generally, if you have your website designed by a company they can make sure that it is optimized and that the search engines can find it.

Thank you all for your advice!

It is very helpful!! xx

There is however a lot that you can easily do yourself to get hits into your website and improve performance in search engine results.

e.g. to get your website to appear on the map at the top of the page of Google search results, you can submit your website yourself to Google's Local Business Centre (for free)... http://www.google.co.uk/local/add

Then there are a myriad of free index websites out there where you can list your business for free (although beware of some of them where you may receive a sales call a few days later for a paid-for listing, sometimes costing around £200 or thereabouts - which you probably don't need)...

Some examples of the free listing websites are:
FreeIndex - The free UK business directory
Hot Frog - Your UK Business Directory
Scoot | Scoot Home - UK Business Finder
Yell.com the UK's local business search engine - search for United Kingdom businesses
Search for a UK business with the ThomsonLocal.com directory.
Jobs, Cars, Property, Free Classifieds and More - Gumtree.com

Then there's a lot to be said about simply swapping links with other websites, e.g. you may have friends on salon geek with websites who would be happy to swap links with you (there was a thread about that on here not so long ago); some website providers even have an automated "reciprocal link swapping" system which makes it easy to request to swap with other sites that the particular website provider has done.

And that's all before getting on to things like "meta tags", "keywords" and the way that you word the text on your website - all of which can make a difference to how the search engines see your site.

But (particularly for Google) probably the most important thing you can do is just to ensure that there are links in to your website from as many different places as possible, e.g. free listing sites, link swaps with other sites - even a link at the bottom of your signature on Salon Geek and any other forums you are a member of - as that will get a link in to your website on every post you make on here.

Then there's Facebook of course, where it's easy to set up a page or group for your business that you can put a link in to your website from - as well as from your personal profile of course...
