Oohlalabeauty, I do not feel that you offended or upset anyone with your question, it is something I would like to know the answer to also and the mind boggles as to how a simple and innocent question can (again) be turned into an ugly debate!! It could only happen on SG!!!!

This has not turned into an ugly debate though!
Jaquelineanna has explained her earlier post and apologised if she got it wrong, which it turned out she had.
The thread has now moved on.
Surely that is the proper grown up way to deal with things, and no need to keep it going.
The OP has got several good answers to her initial question so I feel it has all worked out, as things usually do on SG ;)

My step mother is from Africa and she has asked me to spray her ,she said it gives her a even tone and a glow.
I'm glad you asked this is I was thinking the same

I'm not sure why you offended anyone,my step mum calls herself black and so do her mates who are black
As far as iam aware mixed race is more offensive

hello there
Just thought Id add my thoughts. I cant see you getting much call for many spray tans from people with black african skin types. when I say that, I mean enough to justify buying a litre of specialised solution just for them. Most solutions only have a shelf life of about 6 months and if you work out you only use about 40ml (which is 25 tans). However, only you know your circle of friends, their friends, your area etc and what the demand is so if you think you could offer this service AND make a profit then I say knock yourself out.

Also you mentioend that your friends were going to be guinea pigs (you also mentioned they had black african skin type). Just a couple of things. firstly will they be able to give you the feedback that you require? ie how the tan faded? how long the tan lasted? was it patchy? I dont know how dark they are, but if their skin is as black as you say, I would imagine it would be pretty hard to tell.

This thread is about finding a tan solution for black people, not black people themselves.

Peace and respect.

I know that ,bit it went off track I was simply stating that she hadn't offended anyone.BTW it wasn't me who took off track either. I was just giving my option .

i'm positive that there was a company that included an all over spray tan from fair to black skin when i visited the beauty show last year. i'm hoping ive left the info at work. i was searching online for it when i found this thread.

black skin comes in a variety of tones and shades and its rather ignorant for therapists to assume there isnt a market for it! thats like saying you wouldnt be able to see make up on very dark skin and there is a major shortfall in the cosmetic brands that provide make up for women of colour as it is.

working in salon that specialises in Afro Caribbean hair, if i was to promote a new product that gives an all over skin tone that's ideal for holidays and special occasions, i think I'd be raking it in personally.

the formulations probably don't work in the same way but the application would be the same and so would the end result,

if i find the info from that company i will post it on.

Hi, when I did my training for spray tanning years ago (plus a refresher I did last year) we actually covered black skin, olive skin and lots of other skin tones! The best brand (in my opinion from what we learnt) was SuDo as it adapts to the actual skin tone itself. They don't use percentages - just light, medium and dark. You would use dark for black skin and in my ignorance, I also didn't think it would make much difference, but it gave the lady a lovely glow to her skin. As with all skin tones, black skin can also appear dull at times and it was great for changing that. Hope that helps - I know Salons Direct do SuDo online. Xx

The only way to know I'd to try it in your models and see what you abs they think. You have be best to try a few different brands and strengths to see. Ring some companies up and see if they do samples and what they would recommend. My step daughter has an all year round tan and she doesn't have spray tans but I have found my fake tan in her room, I'll have to pin her down and try it and see. Never thought about it before as no one has asked

I'm black, have done Fake Bake training and was sprayed on the day.

I personally am not bothered with tanning however I can tell you it did give me a lovely glow.

In our salons, we have mixed race, light-skinned and dark-skinned black people both having spray tans and using the sunbeds. Again it is more about the nice glow on the skin and evening paler legs and skin tone differences etc.

I am actually looking for a darker spray tan and thinking of trialing the Nouvatan 20% as we often have people asking if the spray tan would even out skin tone.

Its by no means a stupid question - tan your colleagues and see what their feedback is

Thank you Leanne, that would be so kind of you, I'd definitely like to have the company information :)

jb78 - thank you for the recommendation :) I'll definitely contact SuDo and see if I can get a sample of their products.

IBUK - thank you :) I brought a sample of the Nouvatan 20% to trial on one of my friends actually. Once I've received it and trialled it, I shall let you know what it was like :)

Thanks so much ladies for your helpful replies :)

I think the thing here is to simply tan the lady and treat her as a dark olive skin type.

Due to her skin type she could probably take a pretty high DHA concentrate but like with anyone new its always better to go in with a slightly lower concentrate initially.

Maybe try a 10% to start with and see how that goes....if not dark enough go to a 10% and so on

The dangers of going to high initially is that unlike a european skin type she is unlikley to go orange so thats possibly a relief but the fade of could be troublesome if to high a concentrate is applied so best avoided...after all no one likes a crocodile skin

HTH and good luck
