Hello all

Just want to ask how often everyone full on sterilizes their tools? I'm talking sectioning clips, clippers, scissors, the works.
I'm just wondering because I have been cleaning them A LOT lately, and I dont know if I am being too over the top but I want all my tools to be in tip top condition and make sure that it is thoroughly clean for clients.

I sterilise after every client.

Just out of interest what's your favoured method for sterilising?

I don't sterilize any of my tools. However, I do clean the with warm, soapy water, rinse, dry and place them in an EPA disinfectant for 10 minutes as per the directions, rinse and dry. Truthfully, I think that sterilizing is more than necessary. Hair brushes are not even disinfected but according to our state regulations they are cleaned and washed and dried using a brush cleaner. I use spray disinfectant on my scissors. I do this after every client. I have lots of tools, so usually some are taken care of at lunch time and the rest after work.

I use a leather cloth thing on my scissors after each client, quick dip in barbicide for my comb after every client, de-hair brushes after each one, and then disinfect everything at the end of each working day xxx

I disinfect everything after every client - disinfectant spray and then soak in barbicide. And wash everything at 60 and once a week at 90degrees (in the wash)

But I think I've only sterilized once - testing out an autoclave in college.

Just wondered if we're getting sterilisation and disinfecting confused is all.

I've tried a glass bead steriliser but that turned my tweezers black so there was no way I was going to risk putting my hairdressing scissors in it!

I think you guys are getting sterilisation and cold disinfection mixed up:-(

As a dental nurse I can tell you this about sterilisation!

In order for instruments of any kind to be sterilised they need to be put in an autoclave on 134 degree cycle and a pressure of 2.2lb and sterilisation can only be successful when this temp and pressure is held for 3 mins in the autoclave.

If this can not be achieved sterilisation of instruments will not take place and you can not claim your instruments are sterilised any you are miss leading clients on how your tools are cleaned and process in which its done.

I very much doubt the ones you buy from beauty wholesales do this, in fact I know they don't !

I think which more appropriate for hairdressing is cold disinfection which Mundo or baracide would work well for the salon environment

I usually put hot water in disinfectant, and put all my sectioning clips, clipper guards, all tools except brushes in either my jar or a container and let it soak for 15 minutes, or if i have clients i let them soak while i do clients and switch clips etc (when time is up of course) thought i was paranoid about my tools, but better to be safe than sorry i think?

That is exactly the same as I so

I have also after cleaning put my heat resistant tools in my dishwasher lol

I hope you are joking about using a dishwasher!

I wouldn't put them I'm your dishwasher as viruses (Hepb, HIV, herpes) can only be killed at 134 degrees and can't be killed with cold/hot disinfection or putting it through a dishwasher!!!!!!!!

So your dishwasher could be contaminated with all sorts and your eating and drink out of things washed I their...gross

I understand where you coming from. Take it you have disinfected first before the dish washer. As much as I agree that a dish washer is not my preferred way to clean equipment,HIV, Herpes and other infectious diseases are killed off by Mundo or barbicide and will pose no risk of contamination to you dish washer. Having been involved with the Terrence Higgins trust (HIV) charity, I can tell you that it only takes ten mins in Mundo or Barbicide to make your tools safe for use if you did come into contact with the HIV virus.

never thought about putting my scissors in an autoclave, we have a body piercing specialist in our salon so i have access to one, hmmm. everyone in my job thinks i'm mad for cleaning all my tools, anything i have used (including the seat each client has used) buti think its better to have a nice smelling clean work station that im proud of than having a dirty yucky work station that is embarrassing to be part of.

I have full on steralised my tools in an industrial autoclave before now when I think they might be manky or whatever but I always use barbicide/mundo (changing over) to make sure the things they kill are dead :) I would love to have my own autoclave and sterilise everything after every client but at the moment that isnt possible. I also wash with hot soapy water x

Yes I was joking that's why I put lol at the end.

Barbicide soak and I use surgical spirit to wipe down my straighteners and hair dryer etc. I wash all towels after each client on a 60 and I put that 99.9%bacteria cleaner in there too. I also put my towels on a 95 wash every so often. X
