Hi all I have recently bought (3 days ago) new stainless steel cuticle nippers and knifes. I put them in sterilising liguid that I purchased from essential nails (dream product) it states to leave the tools in the solution over night which I did. today I have gone to take them out of the tray and they have gone rusty looking, and you cannot get it of they look a mess now. any ideas of what I can do with the tools now? and point me in the direction of another suitable sterilising solution for the tools.
thanks

where did you buy your tools from? It may be possible that they're not stainless steel..or maybe only partly stainless steel....the same thing happened to me with a cuticle pusher...it turned out the handle part went rusty but the end was ok...I was misled to think the whole instrument (as you would expect really) was stainless steel...but in actual fact it seems that just the pusher bit was stainless steel and not the handle! great eh!

Mundo do a very good selection of products to disinfect your tools. The customer service there is fab also.

mundo

In regards to 'rescue' your tools, why don't you give them a call and maybe they can offer some professional advice for you. They are a helpful bunch there.

did you dilute ur solution first>? there is Barbicide solution this needs to be diluted and is anti-rust or the Mundo range concentrated instrument disinfecting fluid which i use it is formulated with anti-rust inhibitors mundo is aldehyde and phenol free and very effective against all fungi and virus spores in fact everything it is very good. hth

You can "sanitise" by soaking, but to "sterilise" you will need an autoclave.

Make sure, if you are soaking your tools, that you use a solution that can be used as a soaker (not just a dipping solution or one for spraying).

I know it was mentioned earlier, but I find Barbicide to be completely cost effective and fast. It has rust inhibitors to prevent this from happening to your implements.

You only immerse your tools for 10 minutes.

Did this 'disinfectant' you bought instruct that you must disinfect overnight? That doesn't seem really logical for our line of work.

A few times I thought I'd save a few dollars and go with a cheaper implement, and I have found that every time I do, I find little traces of oxidation, so nothing but the more expensive ones for me now. Honestly, it saves SO much more money in the end.

To get the rust marks off your tools, try wiping them with WD40 or baby oil.

thank you so much for replying. I have tried wd40 but that did not work, will give baby oil a try.
the solution made by dream is a sterilising liquid, that destroys all common pathogens etc. (was trained with dream product, but it was not essential nails course.)
it says decant into suitable sterilising tray. place tools to be sterilised into liquid and leave over night. (never left it overnight before but went out and forget to take them out and clean them) I had a busy day so I put all the sets of knifes, nippers and pushers in the sterilising trays.

I always use barbicide during the day and change after every client and start fresh with fresh tools and barbicide every time. I also use new files and emery boards for every client to make sure every thing is clean.

The instructions sound very vague and as stated by Nail zoo, you need an autoclave to sterilise.

Disinfecting in between clients is essential, but throwing solution away in between is not environmentally friendly. Mundo Rapid Instrument & Tool Disinfectant is medical grade, works in only 5 minutes, needs changing only once a week, and contains rust inhibitors. It's also a ready made solution!!

I agree, the only way to truely sterilize is to autoclave.

I have been taught that Barbicide is no longer a favoured product for sanitation as it is environmentally unfriendly and has been known to cause skin sensitivity. Virkon is supposed to be more acceptable although tools can only be submerged for 10 minutes max otherwise rusting occurs. The product needs changing when it begins to go pale from a pink colour.

mine are stainless steel and the same thing happened to me at the weekend not using dream products though ! now i need all new tools  i got mine from sally hair & beauty supplies

There are different grades of stainless steel, so I'm told by 'im indoors who knows about these things. He says that 316 or similar is marine grade and will not rust in salt water. So I guess the moral of the tale is to ask what grade of stainless the tools are. Easy to be wise after the event is what I said!

My local council wont accept any liquid as a form of sterilisation. Liquids only sanitise and every time you use it the solution becomes less effective dispite what it says on the tin. Reusing solutions creates a dangerous bacterial soup. Your better off getting more than one full set of tools and then putting them all in an autoclave at once. Also my local council says I have to rinse all tools that have been in a solution like barbicide.
