Hey Peeps,

As some of you know I have just started Essential Nails Home Learning Course and thought I was doing well until now.

I had just finished blending my first No 13 nail and was quite pleased with the results until I took it off the Nail trainer and examined it.

Looking down on it from above the sides are straight and there are no steps, but when I look at it 'side on' the is an obvious 'dip' or 'angle' where the tip is attached to the nail.

This has totally put me 'off my swing' (so to speak) as I'm not sure if this is Ok I can't find any side on pictures to compare it too.

I do know that if I try to straighten it up ( Which can only be done by filing up and under the sides ) the end result is a curved sideline when looked at from above, and a weak join that splits across the smile line.

Whats going on ?

I did consider that maybe it was because My chosen tip was too big, and so tried the same nail with a different size but it doesn't make any difference i still get the 'Angel' from Side on, and Now I seem to have lost all ability to even size a tip correctly. It's driving me crazy, I'm also starting to think I have a wonky eye as when I attach a tip I make sure it's lined up to the centre but when I finished attaching the well seems to show a little more on one side ( when you look at the smile line ).
Is this because I'm not filing the freeedge to fit the well perfectly enough ?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I think maybe I need to leave it and come back afresh tomorrow.

I don't understand exactly what is happening with you but Gina Wallace has a great forum speacially design to aswer question about the home courses

http://www.ginawallace.com/phpBB/index.php

it's a great forum and maybe you can search to see if your question has ever been answered or ask it to Gina.
I also know that i've already seen some pic's of finished nail trainer nails, i just don't know where, i'll take a lkook around and if i find them i'll post it for you.
Also, as you will find at the Gina Wallace's forum nail number 13 seems to be a nightmare for everyone, so don't be discoraged if you don't get it right. I gave up on this nail a long time ago and i'm going to submit my essential techniques card with the thumb or the maintenace nail, these are the one i do better. Nail no 13 is recommended but not obligatory.

And, keep trying i had lots of bumps in the beginning too, now i'm pretty hapy with my work...

The nail beds for the Nail Trainer do not have much of a natural curve to them from the side or any other angle. I can see where if you angled the tip downward to get more of a side view curve, you could end up with this little angle you are talking about.

It is equally ugly in my view for the nails to jut out absolutely straight from the side wall!! There should be a gentle curve here and it is known as the 'under arch'. One wouldn't think so looking at some of the ugly "porn star" type nails that you see pictures of these days in many magazines; whites way too long and out of balance, no graceful curve, ninty degree square free edge and those extreme smiles (well sometimes)! My son's girl friend was the one who refered to them as "porn star" nails and I think we should adopt the phrase to describe this type of unattractive look!!

Anyway, to get back to the point, It is possible when applying the product to soften this little angle that bothers you and to disguise it and turn it into a pretty gentle under arch. It will not be a weak point and this will not happen on a real live person unless you are applñying the tip at a rather drastic angle!!

Make sure your tips fit perfectly from side wall to side wall. Then you can line your tip up from the side wall line and it will sit perfectly.

One thing that can 'throw' the angle of the tip off and make it look wonkey is if the natural nail is not filed to perfectly fit the well of the tip. The deepest part of the curve on the natural nail shoud be smack in the center or you will throw your tip to one side when applying it.

don't despair .... early days yet!

Thanks for the advice, I will try working more on getting the free edge perfectly fitted into the tip well.

I guessed that the angle wouldn't be too much of a problem on 'real' nails, I was just concerned that It would look awful and effect my marks for the finished nails.
Also I want try and not pick up bad workmanship from the word Go.

Geeg,

I Know what you mean about 'Porn Star' Nails .

When I last had my nails done I said to the tech "As I can't have the Porn Star Body, I'll settle for the Porn star Nails !! " LOL ;)

I have posted this same message on the Gina Wallace web forum, but as yet have had no replies.

You guys are always there to answer questions pretty much straight away !!

Me Again !!

Prionace,

I've just been back to the Gina Wallace website and found a thread relating to the No 13 nail !

It confirms that I don't have to submit the No 13 nail ( Not that I doubted you ):)

Thanks soooo much., Cos I know feel I can face practice again knowing I can try a different nail !! Pheww !!

Hi all, wish I'd thought of asking you lot first then:cry: . I've struggled with the no 13 for ages!!!!! throwing it across the room, shouting at it, pleading with it and now I find out I don't even have to submit it!!!!!!!1 Aaaarrrrrghhhh!!!!!!!! Sometimes it still looks wonky to me tho, looks ok on the trainer, but when you take it off it looks tosh. is that just me? lol xx

No, it's not just you. At the beginning i did as Gina recomended, saved the nails needed for submiting and praticed on the other (saved one more of each one for mistakes). Actually my first no 13 nail came out pretty good so i didn't think about it very much, just went ahead and did the others for the essential techniques progress card. But then, oh what a disaster! Nail after nail they all looked terrible, one would have air under the tip, another would have flat points due to blending, another would be impossible to properly bled, so i decided to give up, since i've done my nails and a fried of mine and none where that hard to do... So i decided to the essential techniques card using the thumb, wich i thought would be more similar to nail no13, but now there are still some imperfections and i was thinking of doing another card with the maintenace nail, but Gina doesn't think to be a good ides, i'll just submit the one's i have and hope for the best!

I had exactly the same problem as you when I did the course two years ago. I used up all my no 13s and ended up buying loads more packs only to end up binning stacks of em. I was so frustrated that I chucked my nail trainer across the room once!! The tips would have air bubbles and be wonky it was so annoying! Then I had an e-chat with Gina on her site and she told me I could submit any of the other nails instead for the progress card. I did battle with the 13s on the full sets but got there and passed with a distinction so all ended well!

One thing she did tell me about fitting a tip on the 13, to avoid getting air bubbles, was not to worry about the entire well sticking to the nail - as it probably wouldn't anyway (the 13 being a bit dodgy shaped) as well as filing the well (pre-blending) which got me through!

Use the other nails for the progress card and keep the 13s for when you start sculpting!

Looby:green:

PS - I still have stacks of the nail trainer nails left but no no.13s at all!! lol!
