Heya,

Well I'm currently taking the pill and another acne medication (oxy-something) as well as using the prescribed gel from the doctors. I have been doing so for around maybe 8 years or so, I forget to be honest grr lol.

So anyways, the acne on my face isn't bad at all but on my back and particularly breasts it is horrendous to the point that it restricts what I can wear and I refuse to be undressed infront of anyone so it's affecting my personal life too...so yeah, it's pretty bad.

So I was wondering, I hear about people saying that exposure to the sun is good for acne so in this same respect, would the use of a sunbed be a good choice as a means of improving the situation and if so, how would you rate the value of this in comparison to buying over the counter skin products (bearing in mind that the prescribed gel I use is very powerful as it can't be bought without prescription)

I really hope yas can help me with this one!

Laura :)xx

If the prescribed medications aren't working it mah be worth your while going back to your gp and trying something different.
I know a few people who have sun bed sessions, prob 1 per week and they say it helps their acne

i suffer the same as you... and have been doing sun bed once a week to help control it... but now have major dark skin pigmentation around eyes so that looks even worse.. ive since had that recified at a cost of about £600 in total!! if you have been on those meds for 8 years, you need to go back to dr and tell dr its not working, you should see results within 3 months if meds are working.

Go and speak to your dr again, ask them about accutane, it cant be used during pregnancy as its soo strong it can cause birth defaults, but its ment to clear up all acne within 6 months.

I hope to be starting it soon, Ive been giving 2 different meds for now until I get my referral through. good luck hun, as i totally feel for you, mine are bad on back, to the extent they hurt my back and when i move etc :Scared:

I agree with Elaine go back to your doctors and asked to be referred to a dermatologist as they specialise in treatment of the skin. I used to have really bad acne on my face/back and my doctor agreed it was time to ask for a second opinion. Since i have had my treatment it has cleared my back not one pustule in sight! I still get the odd break out on my face which is just hormonal and perfectly normal!
Good luck!

ultra violet light is used by certain industrys to kill bacteria so it makes good sense that sunbeds help to kill off the infection in your skin but it doesnt work for everyone. you need to be careful as your skin could be very sensative due to the creams you are using so take the sunbeds very slowly or you might burn. Uv light will also help the acne scars heal quicker. Hand held blue light therapy units can be bought easily on the net and are proven to help cure acne without any drugs at all. good luck with a solution, i know its awful having acne, i had it for 8 years then all of a sudden it vanished. maybe because i opened a tanning salon. who knows?

I agree with Wax Inc, do check that the medication you are on does not increase your sensitivity.

I have had acne myself and the only thing that worked for me (other than Roaccutane) was P8N8 - Anti-ageing Oxygen Skincare. But before you spend money on products or sunbeds, see if you can get Roaccutane.

You have to have a liver function test before it can be prescribed, it is also imperitive that you don't get pregnant whilst taking it, and it has some slightly unpleasant side effects (mainly extreme dryness of the skin) but IT DOES WORK!

i use the sunbeds for my acne its not that bad anymore but i find if i get a bad bad break out now and again i do use it

but it for using a topical gel, say like benzamycin (spelling) gel it is resurfacing to a point to your skin, that would cause alot of sundamage im sure

I also have suffered with very bad acne, mainly on my face though. I think over the years I have been on every anti-biotic prescribed, including oxytetracylin (which im guessing is what your on) and all the creams like brevoxyl, isotetrenoin etc.My doctor eventually referred me to the dermatologist and I was prescribed roaccutane, your acne does need to be pretty severe to have this prescribed though. I can honestly say it worked a miracle and changed my life!

Unfortunately a few years down the line my acne re-appeared so I am now back on it, I do have some of the side effects, painfully chapped lips and random nosebleeds being my worst but I dont have a spot in sight haha.

My dermatologist told me roaccutane works first time round on 90% of the people it is prescribed to. I unfortunately am of the small percentage who have had to have a second round, but it is a few years back that I was on before and im pretty confident this time round it'l be for good!

As for the sunbed I would say it all depends on how bad the acne is...the sunbed always worked for me but my acne being quite bad I had to use it A LOT (several times a week) and lets face it that kind of usage just isnt good for your skin. But if a session here and there will resolve the problem I say why not!People will whinge about how bad they are for your skin and the risks but its highly unlikely they know what it feels like to suffer acne.

Exposure to UV weather it be from the sun or artificial is an effective means of treating this problem....indeed it is used in specialist hospitals for the treatment of more severe forms of this condition.
Just be careful however....exposure to UV is good for you however over exposure most certainly isn't...so take advice from your GP on apropriate levels of exposure that would be safe(although I do suspect they really wont know the answer and play on the safe side and advise against it)

I would most certainly go back to your GP and discuss things...especially given that you have been on the same medication for some 8 years or so and maybe your immune system has blocked the healing powers of what you are taking...sometimes its good to take a break from a long stint of medication.

My son suffered from severe acne ...I mean severe  he was of a nervous disposition and had given up eating meat at about 14yrs old and had reverted to mainly eating chips,Pizza, lots of milk and cheese.....not a lot of vegetables and fruits :smack:

Two years ago whilst exhibiting Berins at G Mex we worked with Lori Nestore and my son came along to give us a lift and he/Lori hit it off....she picked up on his skin condition and recommended cutting out milk and cheese as part of his diet.
Boy's being boy's this was ignored for a while however Simon did eventually cut these items out of his diet and within 6 months his acne was ,more or less gone.

Maybe just worth a try ...go see a dietitian as well as your GP.

HTH and good luck...I do feel for you
