Tan extractor, LA Tan

I purchased a tan extracter from la tan (the turbo twister) when I used it for the fist time I had the extracter in between me and the client with the black sponge bit facing us then the fan bit facing the wall.

The wall ended up with tan solution from the extracter fan. Did I have the machine the wrong way? Is the fan supposed to be facing the tent with the sponge but facing the wall?
