hi all

so im patch testing most if not all my clients pre spray tan (they sign a disclaimer if they are unable to or do not wish to have a patch test)

i was just wondering whats the advice if a client calls and says that they have reacted to the patch test ?

also i have read somewhere that whilst not reacting to the patch test they could / have reacted when having a full body spray tan ? what would be the advice in this situation too please

many thanks

Well done Karren,
you are doing what many don't

Possible reactions can vary from mild to extreme(luckily not so often) and the best advice is to refer the customer to a specialist who can administer medication to assist.

If a mild reaction refer to their doctor..if extreme or out of hrs refer them to the nearest hospital...sounds extreme but you are (presumably) not qualified sufficiently to administer or prescribe drugs...let the professionals take over:hug:

It is relatively unlikely that someone having a patch test done to say behind the ear that when sprayed elsewhere would react...by doing the patch test itself you are demonstrating a professional approach to possible skin reaction problems.

After all you really cant do a patch test over the entire body now can you...that's a chargeable spray tan

thanks collin

in my mind its not worth compromising on ... start as you mean to go on ... always offer then i know ive covered everything !

Just wanted to point out the disclaimers dont stand up in court and therefore are pointless......patch testing is a clause in your insurance and if you dont do it and they react your in trouble disclaimer or no disclaimer, as a professional you know what to do and are (in the eyes of the insurance company) expected to do so.

Should they react after having a patch test I would advise them to seek medical help, your back is covered as you patch tested them and took relevant precautions needed.

Totally Agree with Tonilee.

I use patch test bottles that I post out to my clients a week before their test and they sign to say if they had a negative reaction. I use the 16% as its the strongest form of DHA and they would more likely react to this.

Its of course not just DHA your client will react to, your also testing the rest of the ingredients too!

thanks guys very interesting

so mandatory patch tests ?

no patch test no tan ?

so today, as an example, i had 3 people wanting tans for tomorrow when they go away ? whats your suggestion in this scenario ?

maybe thats why its not mentioned on the new spray tan consultation forms? on the first batch they are

kx

I always patch test too. At the end of the day any sensible person would and it covers your back. If they react to it the dont get sprayed. Simple.
If you had three people wanting to be sprayed for going away the next day then i would be inclined not to do it.
Some people patch test and then tell them to come back in a few hours, as usually a reaction will come up within that time, but i would keep it safe and turn them away. HTH XX

surely though kate by us sending out bottles with solution in for them to patch test themselves, that wouldnt hold up either as we havent actually done the test ourselves, they would simply be signing that they have done the patch test whether or not they have ?

I think this is really bad! What would you do if any of your clients had a reaction? That could be your tanning career over! You wouldnt have a leg to stand on and your insurance would not cover you.

I would urge anybody who's unsure about patch testing to, firstly, call their insurance company. My insurance company (Salon Gold) told me I had to follow the instructions from the tanning solution manufacturer (which in retrospect sounds very sensible!).

In my case I emailed Sienna X and, FWIW, they recommend a 24 hour patch test under the following circumstances

  • If your client has not had a spray tan before
  • has sensitive skin
  • has had a reaction from self tanning products in the past

Well I am also insured with Salon Gold and I was told "Patch test where necessary" In line with my Brands SUnless Solutions AND Sienna X I patch test every client......clients "circumstances" can change all the time, they ay go on medication or develop allergies etc

Its all very well Sienna X saying those are the times to patch test but what would happen if in the cases of you NOT patch testingout of those circustances and a client reacting.....would Salon Gold cover you then? I sincerely doubt it!! Above all do you really want that to happen?

Also with regard to someone saying earlier sending the patch tests out to clients probably woulnt stand up against a claim I suspect you may be right.....check that with your insurers....

As usual I cant find the thread to link but BABTAC once replied to a thread like this and said in the event of a 24 hr patch test not being possible patch test 10 mins prior, so patch test talk the client through everything and o the consultion.....generally speaking clients that will react, react immediately....

Hi Toni, Yes I fully agree with what your saying, the clients health is paramount. What I was suggesting was the 'minimum' insurance requirements (which so many people don't follow!) and as long as I follow Sienna X's instructions (and I've got them in writing) I will be insured, but yes I do advise extra patch testing wherever necessary and/or possible:)

How do you do you patch tests?, I tried using tissue and solution the other day ( was doing a quick one whilst in the office the other day), and it did not really come off on her skin very well.
What is the best way to do it?

Thanks

Tissues are for blowing noses on and wiping....well lets just leave it there hey :lol:

I also agree with tonilee we should all be patch testing clients 24 hours before having a tan.
I would not advise anyone to send a test in the post for the client to do at home, as like already mentioned there is no guarentee they have done the test plus you should be putting the date, soloution% etc on the consultation form and then going through what is expected of them on the day before the tan and what to wear for the day of the tan etc etc also retail products to get the best results.
