Geeks, I have just had my first tanning complaint! I feel so ashamed.
So, yesterday i went into the salon (on my day off I might add) to do a full body spray tan for a lady who was getting married today.

I went through the treatment like I normally do, vaseline on nails and palms, etc. I sprayed the tan as normal and it looked great at the end. It was one coat of He-Shi Dark - about 12%, I reckon.

Anyway, she phones up this morning saying that there is a very definite line at the edge of her thumb, where the vaseline was taken off and the tan has collected round her ankles and is very noticeable!! She wanted to know if i had any tan remover wipes. I said i didn't, but if used a bit of baby oil, or gently exfoliated the area,it might blend it in a bit. She did not sound amused and almost hung up on me.

This has never happened to me before, Geeks and I do a lot of spray tans. I read and printed out tonilee's tanning methods and hints and tips, but I'm doing them all already. Maybe if I just moisturise the hands instead of using vaseline??

I just feel really bad and incompetent. Isn't it amazing how one person can make you feel like you're rubbish at your job?:irked:
Any thoughts guys?

First of all huni you are not rubbish at your job!
You have done loads of spray tans and have had one complaint!! That sure doesn't sound like you are rubbish to me.
The client may not have exfoliated properly around her ankles ...so not your fault.

Just a little tip for you on the nails and hands. Don't use vasiline hun. Barrier cream is much better and also not as greasy. For nails I use a uv protector varnish. Great for natural nails or extensions! Or just paint clear varnish on them.

Did you do a tester one on her before?

Dont be worrying you've done as much as you can do. I would use barrier cream next time (lotion) as yes vaseline will leave marks around the edges. As for tan around her ankles.......? did you spray too much? what does it look like?
MHO is that if she's not your regular than offer her a free tan which she may not take up but at least you offered. If she's a regular client than she knows that your tans are usually bang on and its a simple mistake.

Calm down hun you are not rubbish at all!

Its just a small mistake we all make those mistakes it comes with the experience. Why not offer for her to come back so you can over spray the thumb area to see if that with blend it in more.

But another tip when you are on the phone and when you do deal with a complaint come across as more strong rather than say use this is might blend it in say use this as it will help to blend it in. As sometimes when you say oh it might or this might help it can make you sound unprofessional.

But dont let this get you down hun it wasnt a huge mistake just a tiny one we have to make mistakes in order to learn from them
Chin up and keep spraying

Its always the ones that you make a special effort for and put yourself out for that complain isn't it? I tanned a lady that was on crutches once! Did her sitting down on a stool inside the tent  She called me a couple of days later complaining that her legs were patchy and asking if I was qualified?? cheeky mare!! Apparantly none of the girls that I had tanned at the house were happy - I told her I would cancel the party they had booked for a couple of weeks time, then the girl who had booked contacted me to say they all liked theirs and it was just her aunt (on crutches) who was moaning! I didnt go back anyway.

I dont use barrier cream etc but dont assume that it is anything you did, I had someone with patchy hands once because she slept with her hands between her legs!

I know how you feel. Sprayed a girl last week and only found out today that she thought it wasn't any good! Does really knock your confidence. I have offered to give her a free tan and she is fine with this and said she would give me honest feedback. I thought it might be my solution because my husband sprayed me at the weekend with the same solution and whilst it looked good when it went on, when i got up this morning i had white patches and blotches.
I started getting paranoid thinking it was either me or the solution.
Then my nephew told me that a girl i had sprayed at his school last week absolutely loved her tan and would be coming back for more! It was the same solution so now i'm totally confused!:irked:

With this situation it isnt your solution, its what your doing or your client you only have to step out of line once in order for th tan to go wrong
e.g leaning on wet things, leaning a part of body on something too long, a bad nights sleep where you are tossing and turning, or not exfoliating 100% properly

Tans are probably the one treatment that can go wrong you just have to be so catious once you have had the tan.
Do remember though you get clients who wont follow instructions and will toatally ignore everything you say then moan their tan has gone wrong :smack:

The thing is i was using a well known brand and then the lady who supplied me with it left and branched out on her own. She renamed the solution but assured me it is still exactly the same solution as the well known brand. It smells the same and everything but because i had a complaint (she's the daughter of a friend and was really sweet about it), i'm beginning to wonder.
I spray my nephew all the time with all types of solutions and he said he hasn't had a bad tan yet but i haven't sprayed him yet with this re-branded solution so tomorrow i am going to spray him with it and see what he thinks.
My husband has only sprayed me twice so my blotchiness may be down to him but you do start worrying!

i noticed that you say she was a bride.
i worked in the bridal industry for some time and i just want to point out that wedding stress makes people hyper sensitive and they fixate on the tiniest thing and blow them out of all proportion sometimes.
so there may have been a slight thing perhaps due to her having dry skin that she sees as a much bigger problem than it really is.
try not to loose your confidence.

Tasha,
its always the ones you go a million miles for that complain..seems to be a link there somehow..must be in the jeans I guess

Quiet what a bride wants a 12% is beyond me..was she trying to clash with her dress or what:lol::lol:...normally spray tans for brides tends to be a more subtle tan.

If you adopt the right technique there really isn't any need for vaseline at all..try it without and see how you go....on the feet ..don't spray these ..let the over spray that drops do the work here.

I hope you charged her extra for coming in on your day off:idea:

I'm in agreement with everyone else here, especially the fact that brides will hyper sensitive. I always use barrier cream, a little of this goes a long way.

I also insist that brides have a trial spray tan done weeks before the wedding to ensure that there is no reaction, they like the spray etc.

Keep your chin up sweetie - we have all been there .

Thanks for your lovely replies geeks. It really does knock your confidence. I just have to keep thinking of all the tans I've done where people where happy.
I always make a point of asking the client when they return to the salon, how their tan turned out. I guess you really just can't please everybody - and i do try to!
Colin - I didn't charge her extra - in hindsight, I think I really should have.:irked:
I'm sending my newsletters out soon, so in hers, I'll write her a wee note saying I hope it turned out ok and that I'm very sorry she wasn't happy and offer her a free tan.

I think the vaseline will be a re-think. Barrier lotion sounds much better!

You know what i love about this business? You're always learning and this site really helps to point you in the right direction and show you a different way of doing things that you had never thought of.
Thanks geeks. It makes me so happy to know that I can seek your advice and get your support.:hug::hug:
Love you all!

Dont give her a free one hun she was a fussy moo and was probably her fault anyway - offer her a half price tan that is more than kind enough

We all get them from time to time,
i had 2 girls in today for a spray tan at 11.30 am they both looked great and were happy when they left,
3.30 pm and they both came back, with one of them saying she wasn't happy because the tan hadn't taken on her like it had on her friend and was demanding her money back,
i explained that i only sprayed her 4 hrs ago and we all have different PH levels to our skin so her and her friend would develop their tans at different rates,
i also said that if she came back after 24 hrs and had no tan (i could see it developing) i would respray her for free,
she threw a right old paddy in the salon much to the amusement of my work experience girl but still did not get a refund
i did how ever give her a voucher for a free spray tan as this will cost me far less than a refund,

every day in the salon is a learning curve and some days are sent to test us but it is best to try and not let it get to you too much

My gosh how annoying :irked: I must say though im lucky ive never had a client kick up a fuss or be rude towards me if it does go wrong they just kindly consult me and i sort them out.

Well i say that tommorow i probably will have someone who doesnt like it

Hi

I feel so sorry for you - theres nothing worse than getting a complaint about your work but as the other girls have said it's more likely that the client didn't listen to your advice (we know what they're like in one ear out the other) Anyway if you don't mind me asking how much did it cost you to start doing spray tans (equipment etc) i am thinking of adding it to my list of treatments and can get a reasonably priced course but i'm afraid the equipment is pricey - any help appreciated.
