I completly agree, under-pricing is ruining the industry! It's under valuing our services.
Also, you say you don't do tans as a money maker and that you make enough from other services, but what if you do tans for £10, you get all the bargain hunters booking you, leaving you less appointments for your regular clients for the services that you make your money on :smack: LOL
xx

So agree with this! I've spent the last 5 years specialising in tanning and think the £22 I charge is well worth it considering salons in my area charge £30!!!! I use expensive quality products and cannot bear it when I see £10 tans trying to undermine what I do.:grr:

The salon near me charges £48 a tan! i always hear people complaining about how they are patchy and orangy but they keep going back to them!!! it seems they think its pricey so it must be good_ wrong!!!!!

The ladies at Sienna X told me that when factoring in the total cost per treatment is around £5.00, I'm guessing that's for machine, spray tan tent, bed roll, barrier cream, cap, stickey feet, tan wipes, solution??

So you charge £10, take off your "real" overheads £5.00 (or less depending in what you've bought), petrol or rent for your salon) and then what are you left with?

Maybe £2 or £3 quid for your time and effort?

I don't honestly think that the people who offer tans for £10 are actually accounting for everything they have bought, they're just thinking, oh it's only solution, but that's not how you work out your price per treatment, you have to take into account EVERYTHING you have bought to cover that treatment.

You're basically working for peanuts plus you're de-valuing the whole industry. Bad idea.

Thank-you to everyone's input :)

I would like to say that it was only the tans I was going to do cheaper the rest of my treatments are at a good price.
BUT after reading and listening to you all I have decided that I will not be offering my tans for a tenner. I guess for some tans are a important part of your income therefore I can understand why you think ten pounds is low, however this was just a add-on service to offer for me.

But I shall stay at £15...Thanks again xx

I have a question about working out cost per treatment. If I buy solution at let's just say 55, caps @ 10, sticky feet @ 24. How do I work this out?? My machine cost €350
Thanks :)

I would love to know what you think?

Im currently charging £15 for my tans and I have been thinking this maybe too much! I am toying with the idea of only charging £10.

I know your going to say this is way too cheap BUT I just get the feeling for a treatment that needs topping up every week 15 pounds seems a bit too much. I never started out doing tans as a money maker they was just I guess a perk. I have enough money coming in from other services I offer, which is why Im thinking of offering tans for a tenner. Plus I also think if a clients says how much is tan .. and you 15 they are a bit umm maybe next time or undecided...but if you say it's a tenner I think they would be inclided to go for it.

My thinking I would rather have lot of weekly clients paying a tenner than having a few a week paying 15 and lets face I'll still make money by charging a tenner from a 1 litre bottle

So there you have what do you think good or bad move?

Dont sell your self short, people WILL pay for a quality service and alot of people are looking for a cheap deal but id say even more people would associate a cheaper service as a less profesional service. And its true. I was faced with this situation myself when some competition was charging £10. But im mobile and its just unrealistic. I charge £20 and i have happy customers who will come back happy to pay £20 again. I offer a loyalty card scheme and run monthly offers so its an incentive. Ive also posted all my regulars some £5 off vouchers for easter, as a easter treat. I also run a half price wednesdays wher on a wednesdays i charge £10 a tan , the principle is its on a first come first served basis. I wouldnt knock money off if i couldnt fit them in. Its an incentive to get new customers but i find people want sprayed nearer the end of the week and are willing to pay the full price.
Id suggest you do that pick as day your less busy and charge half price or £10 that way youl either gain a income for a day you would usally have non or if you dont get a booking you havent lost anything. I wouldnt do it on a day you are usually busy as if you worked out your figures and worked out what your loss would be am sure the idea woule be less appealing.
And just remember your providing a service that people want , when they ring you its because they want a tan & your making a living at the end of the day , you still have to make ends meet just like your customers HTH:Love:

Please don't take this offensively. It is just my opinion after all!

I think stocking a wide range of different brands of tan is just madness. I understand people stocking perhaps a couple but more then that is just crazy! Tanning solution has a shelf life and unless you are a massive tanning company who has many many many clients coming through the door every week it makes no sense. At some point one of those tans is going to go 'off' meaning profit down the drain - literally.

Does it not make more sense to find a brand you are happy with that can offer you different intensities and perhaps source a rapid tan that you're happy with. Sometimes too much choice can be a bad thing. Leading to added time for people to choose what they want, complicated pricing structures which is confusing for both you and the client. Not to mention added delivery costs from different companies etc!

Hi love , I won't take it offensively your right ! This is what I mean I can't afford to offer loads especially with me charging so little , I'm trying to decide which tan I like best at the moment but i'm not making it easy for myself , I prefer 8% sienna & 12% unreal and still deciding on my fave 10% at mo im also liking white to brown but still got some samples to get through of suntana , vani t and omg ! I also need to consider costs after VAT and delivery etc if I use White to brown I can pick it up as based in Leeds so il save Money but I do love the unreal solution - I'm stressing myself out with it :) xx

I have used Unreal for well over a year and to honest it changed my business, I think its a fabulous tan esp for paler clients such a natural colour! I also use Organics, it has a few of the great points that Unreal has like warm spray but I find you get a darker finish. I esp love the Organics Rapid and so do my clients, if you don't mind I'd suggest getting a sample. Having all warm sprays sets me apart from the competition

I'm impressed with it ! I've been sprayed in the 12% and it's the first time my excema hasn't been stinging afterwards , no dry patches anywhere skin feels lush , my only prob is it would cost me £40 + Vat for a litre of White to brown and £70 for unreal with the added costs and delivery charge, I'm thinking I might offer this as a luxury spray and charge £20 see how I go xx

Just take the price of each item you buy, don't forget including VAT. So for instance I use approx 40ml of solution out of 1000ml bottle which will do approx 25 clients, say for instance £45/L divide by 25 clients = £1.80 in product. Then just work out how many caps you buy @ 10 and divide, do the same for sticky feet etc etc and add everything up together. It does all mount up, unfortunately. :/

I don't know how anyone could make a decent profit off a £10 tan :Scared:

I trained with Tantrick and the lovely Jackie last week and just waiting for my certificate so I can get the insurance and start the ball rolling on my new career

At first I will be offering my tans for £10 so I can practise practise practise and once I get the tehnique down and I feel I can offer a tan worthy of £20 of anyones money I will be raising it to £20. I will make everyone aware that this is an offer only lasting one month etc. And I am fully aware that I will most likely loose most of these clients when I raise my prices but with strategic advertising Im sure I will get lots more.

I was also thinking of offering say 2 different solutions and a rapid one, just incase 1 solution doesnt take to a clients skin as well as hoped. But anything more than two would just be too much hassel being mobile.

I for one personally would not go to a therapist that charges £10 for a spray tan! I would be concerned about the product being used and what the end result will be. People will pay more for a quality product and a quality product!

Hi

I've been spray tanning for a couple of years now and I would love to offer spray tans for more than £10 a tan but I live in a town not a city and I think there's half a dozen tan technicians that offer tans for £10 in my town, infact I know a rival tan tech charging 3 tans for £20 at the moment and she is has a really good reputation in the area so I know if I up my prices my clients will go elsewhere. I've started charging an extra £4 if a client wants an extra spray but 9 out of 10 times clients won't go over the ten pound mark. I would say If you live in a City keep your prices above £15.

Another salon very very close to me offers tans for £10. I'm more expensive and they do more tans than me.

However, I refuse to lower my price. I'm happier being known for offering 'good' tans rather than for 'cheap' tans.

I totally disagree that someone offering Tans at £10 doesn't produce a good tans or offer good quality tan solution. I have been to a tan tech and had a St Tropez tan and was charged £25 in a well named beauty spar and I came out looking patchy where the Tan Tech missed bits so I know from experience that charging the most and offering a well named tan doesn't neccessary make you a good tan technician. In the small town where I live it's over grown with Tan & Beauty salons and everyone is trying to compete one way or another, I'm quite happy that I offer good quality tans at an affordable price and I know I do because I would sure hear about if I didn't !!!

Thank You this is what I was thinking but wanted to make sure :wink2: I shall go off now & work this out :)

I'd say go for it and charge the extra! ;)

I use the organic solutions from WOW and love it as it seems to be gentle on my psoriasis and not grab half as much so will not drop below £20 for my tans. I do get alot of clients saying the have been so and so and they use so and so and they dont like it and have paid less than mine. Think it says it all if ur gonna us a better quality of solution you can charge the extra and you will get clients coming to you.
