Billed as the latest technique in hair removal, the Alexandria Body Sugaring method has been introduced at The Carlton Institute. Training is now being offered in the technique at the company’s training centres across the UK, which specialises in accredited fast-track beauty and spa therapy training.

The Alexandria Body Sugaring promises an easier way to hair-free skin. The sugar paste is 100% natural (and supposedly deliciously edible), 100% hygienic and 100% biodegradable. The sugar paste gently exfoliates only dead skin cells resulting in a much gentler treatment even on delicate skin tissue areas like eyebrows and bikinis. What’s more the technique requires only 1/16” (2mm) of hair growth for treatments, eliminating the frustration of waiting for growth.

The Alexandria Body Sugaring technique is fronted by Lina Kennedy who is president of Alexandria Professional, and known as the ‘Sugar Queen’ in Hollywood circles.

After checking out the site and the technique being promoted, I'm just wondering what part of this makes it 'unique' and 'the latest technique in hair removal'?

The claims TCI make raise an eyebrow too. For example they make this claim:

Alexandria Body Sugaring is a safe, virtually pain-free and effective solution to hair removal for women, men and children. It works by extracting hair in its natural direction of growth and does so when the hair is still in the early growth stage, eliminating breakage, unnecessary discomfort, irritation and ingrown hairs while exfoliating dry skin cells. The result is smooth, beautiful skin, without the discomforts of other hair removal techniques.

For a start, even with a good practitioner it's a good way from being pain free, never mind virtually, unless you've downed a few pills and you're anybody's. Secondly, the skin of a child is different to that of an adult's. Sugar paste on a child's skin can do damage. Thirdly, have they not heard of or used hard wax? I'm surprised a beauty college would make such claims as it casts doubt on the other techniques for which they provide instruction.

Sugar paste is just sugar and water heated to caramel stage (which does take practise - I'm not saying you can just whip it in a pot and away you go). It works in exactly the same way as hard wax - although I find there are far less limitations with hard wax than sugar paste. I grew up with sugaring and there is nothing new or unique about the technique described at The Carlton Institute, hence the question as surely I must've missed something.

As an aside, why do people insist on calling themselves 'queens' when they advertise something? Do they not realise the connotations attached to this word?

Not being facetious here; these are genuine questions.

This is certainly not unique. I have been sugaring for well over 6 years now. As with any hair removal technique is vital and it is very easy to snap hair/cause skin bruising using the sugaring method of hair removal if your technique isn't correct.

Also, it is not painless as with any form of hair removal.

I found it to be much more comfortable than waxing, hardly felt a thing. I am puzzled by the unique technique though. we were taught how to sugar and then told if we wanted to buy the Alexandria sugar we had to do a further 2 day course costing about £300.00!!

£300 , what ! for a further 2 day course, I wonder what you get taught in those two days, has anyone done this course?

I've done a course at the one in Windsor it was a complete joke and taking to the other girls who had done other courses they were all shocking. One girl did brazillian waxing and got to do one side of one bikini line and was then qualified!

I called them up and I was shocked that they only do the sugar ball thing on the second course all other course do it all at once I have signed up to Nagwa in Leeds, she has been doing it longer than anyone, so I believe and she is Egyptian so I am confident I made the right choice. American company Alexandria are so up their own ar*E they are inside out! get a grip!!
