I did a set of L & P nails on Tuesday night. So tonight, Thursday, the lady rings and she has lost a nail. She banged it pretty hard while she was working outside, and the whole nail has popped off. Tip and all. There was no natural nail damage whatsoever. I went to have a look and replace it for her, and she showed me the nail that had come away. It was in one piece!

So, do you more experienced geeks think that it came away so cleanly because I:

Didn't prep properly?

Ratio was off - maybe a little too wet?

Or just because she whammed it pretty hard?

The natural nail was completely unharmed (which is good) so I have replaced the enhancement. I checked the other nails, and they all looked ok. There was one spot of minor lift at one cuticle, but other than that they were fine.

I'd love your opinions please. The product was CND Retention + & CND powder.

Thanks! Zondrae

I would say that if the nail came off with no nail damage and you were Using Retention+, which BONDS covalently to the Keratin of thenail plate, then the nail enhancement was never ON in the first place.

The fact that the product hadn't bonded to the keratin of the nail plate in the way that it should (otherwise there would have been damage, make no bones about it) suggests to me that there was some barrier in place on the surface of the nail which prevented the process from happening.

Whether it was your PREP or the plate was wet or you didn't press the product firmly onto the plate when applying would seem to me the obvious things to cause this.

You will have to check your application very carefully. Mix ratio?? You would know if it was too wet as the product would be difficult to work with.

Thank you for your answer Gigi - I think I need to pay more attention to really pressing the product onto the plate. The fact there was no damage, or any natural nail stuck to the enhancement, means it cannot have been bonded properly in the first place. It will be interesting to see if any more "pop off" or if I was not paying attention while doing that particular nail.

Is it possible that after I had prepped, I have inadvertently touched the nail plate and put oil from my skin on the plate? Would that be enough to interfere with adhesion?

Thank you for your help.

i have been having problems with this and also think it is more to do with the pressing of the product onto the nail....i did think it was originally because of rushing with applying the product after putting primer on....rather than letting it dry properly...would this also cause it to happen??

Yes. The primer needs to be completely dry before you start to apply the product.

I thnk you would have had to smear the nail plate with oil to have the enhancment come clean off.

CND teach .. PRESS and smooth. Not pat pat pat and smooth ..... PRESS and smooth. So press already!!! That's how it works.

For what it is worth .. I never use primer with any CND monomer and I never have. I know it's there (if you feel you can't live without it) and you can use it but I never have and have never had the reason to ... if I can do nails that way so can anyone.

A smidge off topic but relevant...... When I did my Masters Qualification in January my Mum was my model, because of her lifestyle at the moment (loads of golf and gardening) she didn't want to wear enhancements on an on-going basis although she has in the past. So, we agreed that I would not take the shine off her natural nails before application and as long as they looked good on the day it didn't matter how long they lasted and the easier they came off the better...... It was at least 3 weeks before a single nail came off!!! Admitedly her natural nail were smooth when the nails came off but the last one was 5 weeks after application. Not bad when no surface shine was removed, lol!!!

I don't think the oil from your finger is enough to have caused the nail to come off......
