I prefer to be really honest so I will tell the entire story which is going to be long. The last time I got acrylics I swore I would never do it again... that was 6 years ago. After Nail Garden opened in my Studio City (CA)neighborhood, I thought I would give synthetic nails another chance.

I walked in one evening and learned about gels. At this point my nails were short. A lady applied gels to my nails and whenever I objected to anything or the way it was done her response was that she has been doing this for a long time and knows what she is doing. What about what the customer wants? What about the shape that I prefer? Now I am learning that this arrogant mindset is an ailing condition among almost every nail tech I have encountered.

Anyway, I went again when it was time for my fills but the lady was not available. A guy who was still learning gels did them and he was a little more responsive to my requests. If I asked something that he could not do, instead of saying that he had been doing this for a long time, he would explain why it could not be done. I went to him again for the third time. My nails were growing and I was finding faith in synthetic nails again. When it was time for my 4th fill, I found out he was not working there anymore :( The only other person that could do the gels there was the lady I had gone to the first time so I made an appointment with her but missed it because of work. I had to go out of town the next morning. I was in the DC area and desparately looking for a place to do gels. I found out NO ONE does gels the way they do at Nail Garden. They use a liquid gel and every one else uses powder. Nevertheless, I did a powder gel fill which was not that satisfactory... but enough to get by till I got back. In this case also, every time I requested that the shaping be done differently the response was that she knows what she is doing.

I went to Nail Garden as soon as I got back. I explained how unhappy I was that the only place I could do my fills was with only one lady at Nail Garden. I explained that this was simply not practical. I decided that acrylics would be a more practical choice because then I'd have more options if I could not get in. They agreed. They sat me down with a lady who they claimed was good with acrylics.

THIS IS WHERE THE HORROR BEGINS. I was about to discover that this lady had NO SKILLS WHAT SO EVER!!! They lady at the front desk had informed me that gels cannot be soaked off and that the nail tech needed to remove them by filing. I said ok. When I sat down, the nail tech filed some of the gel off but said that she would have to soak off the rest. I explained that I was told that gels CANNOT be soaked off. She said that it can be done if I sit for a long time. I refused to sit for an unknown length of time to soak something off that I knew could not be soaked off. This is where I should have gone back to the ladies at the front desk but I foolishly didn't. Instead I said, please file them off as best you can and then lay the acrylic. I watched closely as she did her thing and was getting really worried... no skill AT ALL!!! When it came time to shaping, she started BUTCHERING my nails. I kept objecting to the butchery that was going on and she said that she had been doing it for a long time and knew what she was doing. I felt like the hundreds of dollars I put into growing my nails out was being washed dowm the drain. I objected again and she said she will not do my nails. She handed me over to another lady who refused saying that she did not know how to do acrylics. Then I got handed off to a man who said he would not fix someone else's mistake. Keep in mind that management was or appeared to be clueless as all this is going on. At this point I was in a panic. I saw them go to a corner to talk to the management. I sat there with incomplete and damaged nails until I could no longer tolerate being ingnored. I lost it. I started yelling and demanding that someone takes care of this situation. Management got involved and they tried their best to get the man to finish my nails but he kept insisting that he would not fix someone else's mistake. Finally one of the ladies who only does manicures and pedicures (not acrylics and gels) came forward and said she would help. Bless her soul she tried real hard and shaped them as best she could. She had to patch some areas with more acrylic and file others. In they end my nails did not look great but at least they were complete. Management apologized and explained that they don't know some of the people there that well yet and that they never expected their employees to refuse to help someone. I was still charged for my fills. I also tipped the lady that tried her best despite her lack of experience with acrylics.

I spent hundreds of dollars on gels to grow my nails out. My nails are really short again due to the butchery I experienced last night. I am very upset. I don't want to go back there for fills even if it were free. I just wish I could find a place where the technicians are not only skilled but also have good customer skills. If only nail techs would just listen and pay attention to their customers!!!

Blimey... sounds like you have been through it. There are alot of people out there that dont know what they are doing and claim to be 'qualified' but I wouldnt let them near a dogs nails let alone mine!
I would personally write a letter expalining what you went through and include what you have posted and add on the end that you demand some sort of compensation for your bad experience.
The management (if thats what they call themselves) should have offered you a refund or a freebie. No way should you have paid. I would have refused and walked out!!!
Maybe include in your letter that you WILL NOT be recommending your friends to their salon and are considering writing to the local newspaper!
They dont like bad press..
That might make them think twice about treating the next customer in the same way.
GOOD LUCK X

Hi, Im sorry you feel this way but I can promise you that the majority of nail techs are not like that, you only have to stay on this site awhile to see this. I agree with the post above, there was no way I would have paid for that service if you can call it that. How rude to be arguing in front of you and refusing to complete your service this is very unprofessional. I think you should write a letter of complaint. If I were you I would get intouch with a company like creative nail design and get them to recommend a salon at least you will then know you will get a quality product and professionally trained tech.

I am very sorry for your unfourtunate experience. The problem (in my opinion) with many nail techs here in the US is our schooling is too short. I used to own a large salon here in California and often found that alot of people end up going to nail school because in their minds they think it is a quick and easy way to make money. It is not. The schooling here in beauty schools is very basic. It is up to the individual to take advanced classes after they are out of school and many don't do this. There are alot of what I call "corner nail salons" here in the states that will tell you anything to get you in their chair. They will tell you they are giving you "gel nails" when in fact they aren't just to charge you more. As far as not being able to soak off gels, you are right - however you cannot have acrylic applied over the gels - as it won't adhear. You are more then welcome to email me privatly and I can possibly try to help you find someone in your area to give you a quality service. [email protected]

that sounds a nightmare i'm so sorry that you had that experiance not all techs are like that I hope you can find a tech who will listen and gain your trust enough to have treatments in the future

Hun, you have had a very bad experience and I do not blame you in the slightest for venting your spleen on here....it is good to hear the experiences clients have had, because, we as professional nail techs can learn from them.

There are so many nail techs out there who honestly believe they are doing the best job for you (maybe like in the salon you went to), but personally i think these (one course specialists) techs are in the majority, not the minority of professional nail technicians who take their education and client care seriously. There is no way that your experience would have happened in my salon.

OK, so you may think that there are a lot of nail techs on this site, participating and offering professional and real advice about looking after the natural nail underneath the enhancement, but how many are there really when you look at the number of nail techs listed in the yellow pages for your area etc...I'm sure the same goes for the States too?

I hope you are able to get your nails back into tip top condition and find a professional nail tech in your area who cares about your natural nails too.

Hi
What a night mare!!! Ask around your friends and at the hairdressers for a nail tech they reccommend. Ask someone you see that has gorgeous nails where they go. People will always rave about someone who is doing a nice job.
Go ask for a refund from those people who did such awful work on you.

Thank you so much for your supportive responses. How do I find nail techs that have more than the one-course training mentioned here? If you have anyone you recommend in the studio city/north hollywood area or its vicinity please let me know.

Also, I read some of the posts in the " Which Gel do you use?" thread... I believe the gels they use at Nail Garden is Brisa. How do I find out about other places in my area that use that same kind of gel? I really liked that gel but don't want to be limited to Nail Garden and their one tech.

Hi there,
I'm so sorry to hear about what you have gone through. That's awful!!! It's so frustrating for us "good" techs to hear about what goes on out there. Anyways, I was looking on the Creative Nail Design website and came across this salon for you. They should be reputable if they were on the CND site.

If they offer a custom blended manicure, I would go for that. It will mask any of the damage the previous tech may have caused...just until they grow out again and are in tip-top shape.

I hope this helps you.

if you want to find someone that uses Brisa you should contact someone at Creative Head Office. I think the best way to find a good tech is to get reccommendations from other people (don't be shy about stopping someone on the street/in a shop & ask them where they get theirs done. If you can't find anyone like that, talk to the tech before making an appointment. Ring & explain you've had some bad experiences before. Share your concerns, ask about her products (but please be aware there are alot of quality products out there, mainly I would be seeing what her additude is, because I think the problem at the salon that you went to was their adittude & lack of professionalism.

What a nightmare - hope you manage to get your nails sorted out by a professional nail tech.

I agree with Cindy D. I grew up in a family owned salon so i was doing nails long before i went to school for it. People think why not, training is short and everyone always needs their nails done but little do they know that most nail tech schools only give you the basics, most do not put in the extra effort to continue to practice they just figure that since they have their liscence that they know all. Good luck and hopefully your next nail experience will be alot better!
